Our very first look at our blood python due to arrive Friday.

This photo doesn’t do this big guy justice of size.To the eagle eyed lot of you questioning why he is a little full in colour. That is because he is in shed so when he is on shows his nice beautiful colours will show !

The blood python is considered a relatively new snake as being officially recognised as its own species in 2000.These stunning snakes come from south east Asia. And like all other constrictors these are none venomous.

These animals are heavy bodied snakes and are large and heavy all though they might not be for everyone you can’t deny they are simply stunning snakes !

This is our big girl hella, she is our boa constrictor

What does hissing mean ? Hissing in snakes is warning sound to let other animals know they are not playing around.

A lot of films would have you believe snakes will just hiss at random and also flick their tongue at the same time. This is actually far from the truth .Snakes like most animals have ways of giving warnings and a snake will hiss. However a snake hissing isn’t exactly what you would think snakes actually blow air out of tube and that is where the hissing sound comes from. What makes a boa constrictor unique is instead of blowing air out to create the hiss a boa actually sucks air in creating that distinctive hissing sound.

Now coming back to the video of our snake hissing. Why was she hissing ? Well we have to look at the circumstances around what was making her hiss ? Well in this instance it was shedding.Even though you can see the whole process, when snakes go through shedding it’s an incredibly stressful time.A snake will go in to what’s called blue where the snake will have near enough temporary blindness as the skin over the eyes is coming off the snake. How snakes shed is another topic which we will cover in another post however why our snake was hissing was down to shedding.Snakes
will also hiss if they feel threatened if predator is near by or after they have eaten and waiting for their food to digest.

Available for all bookings.Contact us as soon as possible to book a day !

More myths and common phrases we hear

“I knew someone whose snake slept beside him and it was sizing him up “

Now our girl hella is a big girl 9ft long and when fully grown we are looking around 12ft maximum. Now is this big enough to eat a human ? The answer is no and even with large bodied snakes the answer is still going to be no .For a snake to be able to eat a human there is going to need to be some huge factors to consider. We would be looking at a snake of huge size and large body.Historically speaking there was a snake of this proportions called a Titana boa.

Now since this snake is long extinct it’s not something I’d be worrying about any time soon.

However booing with Mac’s reptiles you can learn about different kinds of snakes learn about handling and behaviour so if you do see one in the wild you’ll not run away ! (We’d like to point out here the odds of you finding a snake in the wild is very slim we also strongly encourage not to handle any wild animal )

For all bookings message the page !

One of the most common phrases we hear on our shows is “that’s a turtle”

So we are going to help a few people out who struggle to know the difference between a tortoise and a turtle

So both animals are reptiles which means they are endothermic animals ,meaning they need external heat source I.e in the wild the sun !

Now the easiest way to tell a turtle and a tortoise apart.(Queue the dramatic drum roll ) A tortoise lives on land and turtles are aquatic reptiles. And if you’re still finding this difficult one has feet and one has fins ! For that one I’m going let you guess which is which

Here with many reptiles facts and for close up and hands on experience with reptiles book with Mac’s reptiles 5 star reviews and an experience you’ll not forget !

With our Happy news we would like to show you someone we’ve had under wraps.Although his name isn’t officially decided yet it’s time to show you our little secret. This is a Jackson chameleon and what makes these animals so unique is the fact they have horns on their head.Myself I’m keen on the name Michael for our chameleon. While I leave you with the cheesy joke have a look at the little guy himself
