At Bella & Brave we have rescue sheep & goats, taken on as unwanted pets. Most of them are very old,

Bella & Brave is a sheep and goat sanctuary in Newburgh, Lancashire. Our dream is to move to larger premises where we can open to the public and provide an alternative to petting farms, where people can see rescue animals, eat vegan food, and let their children play. We want to provide a home for sheep, goats, chickens, and other animals where animals can live out their natural lives.

Boris knows exactly what to do when it’s time for extra feed! All the others rush to the gate, pushing and shoving, but good ol’ Boris saunters over in his own time, the crowds parting before him. He’s a legend 🤟

Boris has a big extra feed of sugarbeet and Readigrass every day, because he struggles to eat due to tooth loss. We allow some others to join him if they need some weigh-gain, or sometime just for a treat!

Cracker has been fitting in nicely with his new friends - here he is feeding with them 🥰
Gordon has his moments, and has been headbutting him - so Gordon may get put with the main hers if he doesn’t start behaving himself!!

Stocked up on feed today - this lasts us about a fortnight, and costs us £224 😭

Cracker is getting on well with his new friends this morning. Everyone has settled nicely. 😻

Now is a great time to look back on how far he’s come. He arrived looking miserable and full of ‘scab’ (a highly contagious condition in sheep, caused by mites). It took a whole 7 months for him to be clear of scab and safe to mix with other sheep. He’s been desperate to get out of isolation 😢 bleating louder than you could possibly imagine a sheep could bleat !
Rescuing Cracker has been the most rewarding thing to do. It’s what we love to do. It’s what Bella & Brave is all about 💕🐏🐐

Cracker is in with the ‘Oldies’ group at the moment, as a slightly less mobile sheep, born with only 3 hooves. If you want to meet him in person at the sanctuary, follow the outer path around the field to the far side of our field.

CRACKER IS FREEEEEEE! ⛓️‍💥

After a whopping SEVEN MONTHS in quarantine 😩 his blood results are finally negative for scab 🥳
We let him out with the oldies straight away (well, after a few cuddles and scritches from us). He couldn’t believe he was finally allowed out. He went out quite gingerly, and when he did finally make his way into the middle of the oldies field, he got a few head-butts 😢 Even some of the quiet girls had a little go at him, but the boys were really quite mean. They settled a little, and then everyone decided to keep their distances. I’m sure they’ll have learnt to get along by tomorrow. They just need to sort out their pecking order.

We’re so happy that Cracker is finally free and well. He can now start to enjoy the sanctuary life he deserves 🥰

Yesterday, we gave all the main flock a shot of footvax vaccine and sprayed on deosect to kill lice. They are all feeling glum today - that vaccine knocks them for 6, but to stop hoove infections it needs to be done.

We’ve had a couple of BIG vet visits lately. Thoughtfully, the animals have been acquiring problems at the same time, so at least it’s been fewer visits 😃
Two weeks ago Stuart came out to see SIX in one go; Boris for quidding (which basically means dropping food. We think he looks like he’s chewing to***co), Ralph for losing weight (we couldn’t catch him 😒), Uncle B for his aggression, Rusty for lethargy, and Robbie to have his horns trimmed!
Today Stuart came out again, and it was abscesses all round! Three abscesses in hooves (Freddy, Roman and Bruno) and one on a chest (Bruno) that we found as we were doing feet!

Boris has lost some back teeth, so he’s struggling to eat - not that it stops him trying! So he’s on a supplemented diet now, of soaked sugarbeet and Alfalfa.

We will have Stuart out again soon, to retest Cracker for Scab, check Ralph over (we think teeth problems for him too), and any other things the animals want to throw at us!

Obviously these visits bring bills, and we are struggling to cover them. Any help towards them at all is very much appreciate 🙏 All donations go to the animal’s care.

Bella & Brave is a vegan-run animal sanctuary in Wigan. We started with 8 elderly sheep in February 2017 . Our dream is to move to larger premises where we can open to the public and provide an alternative to petting farms in a mutually respectful setting. Somewhere that people can meet rescue animals, visit a vegan cafe, let their children play, and use the facilities for community groups. We want to provide a home for sheep, goats, chickens, and other animals where animals can live out their natural lives, so we can show people how animals should be looked after and respected.
