I don't post here often, but I wanted to say hello properly.

I'm Alan, and I run Wigan Pet Farewells from right here in the borough. I know most of you won't need me today, and I hope you don't need me for a long tie. But when the day comes that you do, I want you to know there's someone local who will treat your pet like family.

I collect from your home, care for them myself from start to finish, and return their ashes back to you in 72-hours. One person, every step. No handoffs, no call-centres, no rushing.

If you're ever in that heartbreaking position - or if you just want to know what I do and how I do it - please feel free to message me. I'm here.

🐾 A scary lesson from my own living room 🐾

Yesterday I thought I was being a good dog dad. The sun was blazing, so I set up the hose pipe for my boy to play with — he loves chasing the water stream and catching it in his mouth. Harmless fun, right?

Except it wasn't harmless.

A few hours later he went quiet. Didn't react when his dad came home — and trust me, he's usually bouncing off the walls. I put it down to the heat, carried him upstairs to the fan, and that's when it got weird. He leaked a tiny bit of wee, raced downstairs, and stopped dead on the last step to let out the longest wee I've ever seen. This is a dog who's been toilet-trained for years. I knew something was wrong.

Thankfully he bounced back to his normal self. But a friend just sent me a post about water intoxication in dogs — and I had no idea how serious it is.

Turns out drinking too much water too fast can dilute the sodium in a dog's blood, causing swelling in the brain. It can be fatal. And it doesn't just happen from swimming pools — garden hoses, sprinklers, even obsessive ball-fetching in the sea can trigger it.

Signs to watch for: • Lethargy / seeming "off" • Loss of coordination • Bloating or vomiting • Excessive urination (like my boy) • Glazed eyes or confusion • Seizures in severe cases

What to do: If you suspect it, get to a vet immediately. This is not a wait-and-see situation.

I got lucky. My dog recovered quickly. But I won't be letting him guzzle from the hose again — short play sessions, plenty of breaks, and fresh water in a bowl, not a jet stream.

Stay safe out there. The heat is dangerous in ways we don't always expect. 💙

Losing a beloved pet is a deeply emotional experience, and the grief that follows is both normal and valid. Pets are more than just animals—they are family members, loyal companions, and sources of unconditional love. If you are struggling with coping with pet loss, know that healing takes time, but there are ways to navigate this difficult journey.

This guide is here for anyone who is suffering with the emotional impact of pet loss:

What We Do

I know that when you call me, you're not really thinking about "the process." You're thinking about your companion. About making sure they're okay. About getting through the next few days.

I can't take the grief away. I wish I could. But I can make this part easier for you.

You call me on 01942 944882. I answer. We talk. We find a time that works — today, tonight, whenever you need.

I come to you. Whether that's your home or your vet's practice, I take your pet with the same care I'd want for my own. No rush. No fuss. Just respect.

And here's what I want you to know: it's me throughout. From the moment I collect your companion, through the cremation itself, to the moment I return their ashes to you. No handovers. No other departments. No faceless businesses in between. Just me, the same person you spoke to on the phone, treating your pet like family every single step.

Their ashes come back to you in whatever memorial feels right — a scatter tube, an urn, something that fits who they were.

And then you breathe. And you remember. And you find your way forward, with them still close.

That's it. That's the process. But really, it's just care.

A few years ago, I lost my own dog. I won't pretend it was easy — it wasn't. But what stayed with me, long after the grief softened, was how important the ending was. Being treated with dignity. Being given time. Being spoken to like a person, not a customer.

That's why I started Southport Pet Farewells. And that's why I'm here now with Wigan Pet Farewells — because I know there are people in Wigan, Ashton, Hindley, Leigh and beyond who want the same thing for their companions. Someone who cares. Someone who understands. Someone who treats your pet like family, because that's exactly what they are.
