☀️ Summer Safety Reminder ☀️

Most dog owners are aware of the dangers of hot pavements, and rightly so! hot surfaces can cause painful burns and blisters to paw pads in a matter of minutes.

However, it’s also important to remember that heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency and can occur in a variety of situations, not just during walks.

Dogs can develop heatstroke:
🐾 While exercising or playing
🐾 In the garden on a hot day
🐾 In warm, poorly ventilated rooms
🐾 During travel
🐾 In cars (even for a short period of time)
🐾 Anywhere they are unable to effectively cool themselves

Unlike humans, dogs have a limited ability to regulate their body temperature. Once overheating begins, their condition can deteriorate rapidly, potentially leading to organ failure, collapse, and death.

Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, weakness, vomiting, disorientation, and collapse.

As temperatures rise, please remember to consider both the temperature of the ground and the overall environmental conditions. Protecting your dog’s paws is important, but protecting them from overheating could save their life.

If you suspect heatstroke, seek veterinary attention immediately.

With temperatures expected to remain exceptionally high this week, we are asking clients to carefully consider whether their pet needs to travel.

🐶 For brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Persian cats, the risk of heat stress is significantly increased. We strongly advise postponing routine appointments where possible until cooler weather returns.

🚨 This week we recommend attending the practice for emergencies or problem appointments only. If you are unsure whether your pet needs to be seen, please give us a call and we will be happy to advise.

How to keep your pets safe this week:
❄️ Keep pets indoors during the hottest parts of the day

💧 Ensure fresh, cool water is always available

🧊 Provide cooling mats, fans or cool shaded areas

🚫 Please avoid walking dogs during this heatwave. Even early morning and evening temperatures may be too high, and pavements can retain dangerous levels of heat. Missing a few walks is far safer than risking heatstroke.

🚗 Never leave pets in cars, even for a few minutes

👀 Watch for signs of heatstroke including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting or collapse

If you are concerned about your pet or believe they may be suffering from heatstroke, please contact us immediately.

Stay safe and keep cool everyone ❤️

An ear mite viewed at 100x magnification and completely invisible to the human eye🔬

Although tiny, ear mites can cause significant discomfort and secondary infections in cats, dogs and rabbits🐶🐱🐰Pets may not show obvious signs until the problem is advanced🤒

Routine parasite control is a vital part of preventative healthcare and helps to reduce the risk of infestation and ongoing ear disease 🐾🦠

Lovely Indy the cockapoo 💕In recently for her spay and an absolute star throughout🌟She has naturally long eyelashes, made to look extra dramatic by the eye lubricant used to protect her eyes whilst under anaesthetic🥰

Why we use eye lubricant under anaesthetic:
• Animals lose their blink reflex under anaesthetic, so tears are no longer spread over the eye surface
• Without blinking, the cornea can dry out very quickly
• Dry corneas are at risk of abrasions and ulceration, which is extremely painful.
• Eye lubricant acts as artificial tears, keeping the cornea moist and protected until normal blinking returns.👁️
