Today it was commented "I know it's unusual to have male riders." by one of our male adult riders. This is a sentence I hear regularly from men, who say they wish they had ridden as a child but always thought it was a "female" thing.
This spearheaded a conversation about myths around riding, riders and riding schools.
MYTH BUSTING TIME!!!!
-We actually have more adult male riders than female adult riders!
-We often have gym goers comment that riding can be more of a work out than the gym! (Especially if you tell our head coach your a huge fitness lover... This group know who they are!) Riders definitely don't just sit there, though it's actually a HUGE compliment on your competence if it looks like you do!
-Our oldest complete beginner so far was 78! You are never too old to learn!
-You don't need to be "posh" to ride, nor do you need fancy equipment.
-Riding is much more affordable than people think.
-Many people seem to think that riding school horses are dead to the leg, sour and impossible to get going. Infact, all of our horses and ponies are schooled regularly, particularly in dressage, using the lightest of pressure (and can all halt without reins!)
- Old style "pony kicking" is outright BANNED on our yard on welfare grounds.
- Lunging, long reining, in-hand sessions, care and management also available! It's never just about the riding =D
- Qualification training available - some of which is free of charge!
- There is never "nothing left to learn" every day is different and every day is a school day around horses!
