We spend so much time talking about setting dogs up for success and avoiding stress but isn't failing at something stressful?

The short answer is of course YES ........ But to elaborate

Stress is an important lesson to learn. We want resilience in our dogs, we want emotional regulation and we want them to cope in everyday life, which involves stressors.
Therefore telling clients "avoid" all stressful situations is not what you'll get from us.

We'll look at catering scenarios for your dogs to learn to deal with stress and we'll advise you on body language to look out for and how to prep them to succeed in those instances.
We want you to be educated and confident in what your dog can cope with and how to push them successfully so as a team you progress.

Back to the video - favourite toy ever has come out for the first time on the walk. The STOP exercise he knows and performs very well. But have we proofed it ???
Apparently not !
If at first you don't succeed try try again 🏹
Additional stress added into a simple training exercise can mean growth - for both of us

You've got through the puppy stage, past the puppy blues, and you think it's about to be plain sailing.. then adolescence hits. Hormones change, testosterone surges in male dogs, cortisol spikes, and dopamine makes the environment seem like a wonderland.

It is so tempting to think your dog needs a firmer hand. They're being purposefully disobedience, a 'naughty' teenager.. when in reality, your dog is struggle as much (or more) than you, and what they actually need is support.

So how can we make adolescence easier on our dogs and on ourselves?

⭐Engage in play and mental enrichment - keep the bond strong, as the teenage phase can bring about frustration for everyone
⭐Go back to basics, and use your management when you need to. Recall? Don't know her. Clip that longline back on and remind your dog that ignoring a recall is not what we do
⭐Do not expect the same progress or experience as pre-adolescence. Do not assume your dog's new exaggerated version of themselves is permanent. It's a phase, and the more we can support them, set clear expectations and stimulate their brains, the easier it will be on everyone

Have you got a teenage dog? Drop a comment below if adolescence has been a tough ride for you, and let's see how we can help! ⬇

As well as breed-specific enrichment, exercise, nutrition, play, social fulfilment and much more, your dog also needs rest. The problem is, some dogs don’t quite know HOW to.

You can teach a dog to relax, and often it’s a very necessary part of training to ensure they can decompress, relax and process learning and their environment.

We often use the Karen Overall Relaxation Protocol as a starting point which can (and is designed to) be used both inside the house and in new environments.

We’re having a neutrality walk on the 7th June where our group walk gang will practise their settling out and about around each other and distractions.

It’s not flashy or fancy, but is an important skill for our dogs.

We know all too well how having a reactive dog can make your world feel small and isolated. Avoiding nice walking routes, going out at unsocial hours and missing out on lots of the joys of owning a dog.

We get it, and we can help you build your confidence and skills to get you back enjoying your time together. It's not about avoidance or neverending management, but we can help you rehearse positive experiences and integrate into group and social situations with your dog.

You and your reactive dog deserve to enjoy training and dog sports too, and in fact you'll probably benefit the most from it.

Drop us an email at 📧 [email protected] to be put onto our reactivity waitlist. You'll be supported by head trainer Lauren Parker who has 11+ years of experience behind her, and supports people every month to modify their dogs behaviour and build owner and dog confidence.
