Coming up to the end of her second week at LLM, we’re pleased to introduce our new vet, Kate!

Kate grew up in Staffordshire and recently graduated from Harper-Keele Vet School. She may already be a familiar face - Kate has seen practice with us several times over the years and has worked on dairy farms in Staffordshire, Scotland, and New Zealand!

Expect to see her getting her hands dirty over the next few months, and we hope you’ll all give her a warm welcome!

It's World Mental Health Day 2025 💚

Today is a day to talk about mental health and show everyone that mental health matters.

We understand that farming can feel very isolating, and at times, it can be difficult to remember that you’re part of a wider agricultural community.

We are always here to put the kettle on for a cuppa and a chat.

It's okay to ask for help, no matter what you're going through.

⚠️ Acorn Poisoning Risk This Autumn! ⚠️

With autumn in full swing and a record crop of acorns dropping into pastures, farm animals face an increased risk of acorn poisoning this season. Cattle and sheep are especially vulnerable if grazing near oak trees—green acorns are highly toxic due to tannins and phenols, which can lead to deadly kidney and gut damage.

Clinical signs to watch for:
- Loss of appetite, depression, and going off feed.
- Constipation initially, then black or bloody diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain, colic, or bloat
- Excessive thirst and urination; dehydration
- Rapid weight loss and weakness
- Straining to pass faeces and urine
- Swelling (oedema) of lower legs and belly
- Jaundice (yellow mucous membranes)
- Sudden death in severe cases, especially in youngstock or after ingesting large quantities
- No specific cure exists—urgent veterinary attention is critical! Remove animals from oak-rich fields and provide plenty of clean water.

Prevention is key:
- Fence off oak trees, especially during mast years, and supplement feed if forage is short.
- Check stock daily for signs of illness

This year’s heavy acorn crop means extra vigilance is vital—please share to help protect your herd and flock!
