Meet Biscuit 🐾A brave little fighter!

Biscuit is a very special rescue puppy who’s captured everyone’s hearts at our South Ockendon practice. 💛

He was born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his legs, leaving him with hind limb injuries and in need of urgent treatment and round-the-clock care. Thankfully, our lead vet and branch partner, George 🩺, stepped in to give him the best possible start and took him in for himself! He took him home and, with the help of our nursing team, hand-reared him back to health.

Biscuit is now doing brilliantly, growing stronger every day, and is a much-loved member of the South Ockendon team. 🐶✨

This Mental Health Awareness Day, we’re reminded that the unconditional love of pets can play a big part in supporting our wellbeing. Whether it’s a wagging tail after a long day, a purr that brings comfort, or simply getting out for a walk together, our companions remind us to slow down and take care of ourselves.

At Medivet, we’re proud to care not just for pets, but also for the people who love them. Supporting each other; colleagues, clients and communities is at the heart of what we do.

Let’s celebrate the bond between people and pets, and the role it plays in better mental health.

Say hi to this prickly little guy! This brave little hedgehog was brought into our Medivet Beeston practice after being injured by a strimmer and needed an amputation.

Garden wildlife often need a helping hand and small changes, like checking long grass before strimming, can make a huge difference. 🌱✨

We would like to introduce this very brave boy, Arthur. 🐈

Arthur came into out South Ockendon practice recently for a tail amputation. There are many reasons a cat may need an amputation and in this case it was because Arthur was found as a stray and had a severe infection in his tale. The team made the decision to amputate so Arthur could live a happy and healthy life.

Grass seed season is upon us!🌾

During the summer months our vets treat alot of pets with issues caused by grass seeds. Grass seeds are small, pointy seeds that are attached to grass stems and are often found in meadows and woodland. These seeds can attached onto your pets fur and lodge themselves into their paws, ears, nose and eyes!👀

How can we avoid grass seeds?
🌾 Try to avoid areas where you can clearly see grass seeds and check your dog over thoroughly after a summer walk. Checking over your pet daily can help spot grass seeds before they become a problem!

🌾 Paws - Check between your pets toes for grass seeds in the fur or skin. You may notice the paw is sore and inflammed and your pet may be licking it or limping.

🌾 Ears - Grass seeds can easily become lodged in your pets ears without you noticing. If your dog is shaking their head or holding their head to the side it could be a sign a grass seed is lodged in their ear canal.

🌾 Eyes - Check around your pets eyes and make sure their is no redness, discomfort or rubbing their eye with their paw.

🌾 Armpits - These areas should be checked carefully since excessive movement can cause seeds to get lodged in hidden places!

If you have long-haired or fluffy dog its a good idea to keep the fur trimmed around their ears and paws! This helps spot anything that might be picked up on a walk.

If you suspect your pet has an injury caused by a grass seed please contact your vet immediately 📞

⚠️WARNING SURGICAL CONTENT⚠️

Meet Shelby 💛

Shelby the Miniature Schnauzer came to us last month when her owners noticed she was urinating more than normal.

Our vet Raul examined Shelby and thought he could feel something abnormal in her abdomen. We performed an ultrasound and found 3 large stones in her bladder. Sadly, these bladder stones were too big to dissolve using medication and a special diet so they had to be surgically removed.

The next day Raul performed a Cystotomy (surgery to remove the bladder stones) and sucessfully removed all 3 of the large stones along with some smaller stones that had formed. He did this by making an incision into Shelby's bladder, carefully removing the stones and flushing the bladder with saline before stitching it back up.

The surgery was a success and Shelby was a very brave girl throughout! She recovered well after an overnight stay at our Woodstock hospital and came back a few days later for a post op check with Raul!🩺

Here she is at her post op check looking and feeling so much better!🐶💛

May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month!💚

So we want to show our appreciation for our dedicated veterinary nurse team who go above and beyond to provide exceptional care for your pets!🐾

Registered veterinary nurses (RVNs) are compassionate, skilled medical professionals who are the heartbeat of every veterinary practice 💛 However, the RVN role is often misunderstood by the general public.

RVNs are registered through the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and we take great pride in our profession. From monitoring anaesthesia, placing iv cannulas, taking blood samples to performing diagnostics like lab tests, cytology and xrays. Conducting nurse consults, nursing sick animals, administering medication and fluid therapy to even performing surgery!🩺🩻 Plus we can do this with a range of species including, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents!🐶🐱🐰🐹

Veterinary nurses are animal lovers, educators, patient advocates, phlebotomists, lab technicians, anaesthetists, receptionists, radiologists and much more! We go above and beyond and work tirelessly to give your pet the best care day and night! ☀️🌙

So this month (and every month) lets give veterinary nurses the recognition they deserve!🩺💚

Meet Eevee 🐱🧡

Last month Eevee came to us for a routine dental check up and after a thorough examination our vet found resorptive lesions on several of her teeth. A painful and progressive condition that affects more than a third of adult cats.

🦷 What are FORLs?
Feline ondotoclastic resorptive lesions (FORLs) are the second most common dental condition in cats and often goes unnoticed since cats are masters at hiding pain. FORLs are lesions on the teeth that occur when cells in the cats body called odontoclasts destroy the tooth's surface. Starting at the gum line it gradually dissolves the root of the affected tooth and continues to the tooth crown. This leaves the pulp cavity exposed causing pain and sensitivity and progresses until the tooth becomes weak and susceptible to fractures. The cause of tooth resorption is still widely unknown but studies suggest cats with periodontal disease can be more susceptible to FORLs.

🦷Signs and symptoms:
Sadly, FORLs do often go unnoticed since cats don't always show obvious signs they are feeling pain or discomfort. However, common signs of dental issues can include drooling, difficulty eating, eating on one side of the mouth, pawing at the mouth, red, inflamed gums and stopping eating altogether.

🦷How to treat FORLs?
The best and most effective treatment for FORLs is extraction of the affected tooth or teeth to relieve pain and prevent further damage. This is performed with a dental procedure under anaesthesia.

🦷Regular dental check ups are also key to detecting early signs and can make a huge difference in your cat's comfort and long-term health. If your cat hasn't had a dental exam in a while, now is a great time to book an appointment. A pain-free mouth means a happier and healthier kitty! 😸

Here is Eevee after her dental procedure feeling much happier and pain-free! (she even posed for the camera to show her appreciation!) 🧡
