๐ŸŒŸ Pet of the Month - Lulu ๐ŸŒŸ

She is the most awesome Clumber Spaniel. She was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma back in September. ๐Ÿฅ

She initially presented with generalised enlarged lymph nodes across her whole body. She was quieter in herself and sleeping more. ๐Ÿ’ค

Lulu is a very good girl, and we were able to test her lymph nodes by placing a needle in the lymph nodes and taking cells out to send away to our external lab. This unfortunately confirmed our suspicions. ๐Ÿ’‰

Given that Lulu is only 7 years old and otherwise well in herself her owner opted to start chemotherapy. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ ๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธ

There are many considerations when starting chemotherapy. Potential side effects for Lulu, most commonly tend to be gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting/diarrhoea. Other side effects such as damage to heart muscle and bone marrow suppression can occur. ๐Ÿฉบ

Unfortunately, chemotherapy is unlikely to cure Lulu but may give Lulu and her owner more time to enjoy their awesome adventures. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Another important factor is the time commitment for the owner- the protocol we are using is 6 months long and requires twice weekly visits. ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

Each week Lulu requires a blood test to check her blood cells are high enough to tolerate another dose of chemotherapy and the risk of infection is low. ๐Ÿฉธ

Then the next day requires intravenous chemotherapy. Each week the medication differs but at times it needs to be administered over 30 minutes into her vein. ๐Ÿ’‰

Lulu lies down and takes a nap for this! Not many patients would do that. We are so proud of Lulu. Her lymph nodes have reduced in size, and we are all hoping for a long remission time. ๐Ÿฅฐโค๏ธ

๐ŸŒŸ Pet of the month - Lottie ๐ŸŒŸ

Lottie first came to us in July when unfortunately, she was hit by a car. She presented to our Warminster branch and was stabilised here. ๐Ÿšจ

She had fluids, pain relief and eventually further diagnostics which included x-rays. She had extensive wounds to her hind limbs but initially these were just covered to prevent further contamination whilst she was stabilised. X-rays revealed a fracture to her pelvis. ๐Ÿฉป

Once stable to travel she was transported to our Trowbridge branch for hospitalisation.
She was then able to be sedated and have her hind limbs wounds explored and cleaned thoroughly. This revealed the extensive damage. ๐Ÿš‘

Unfortunately, most of the wounds were over areas with minimal skin, so wounds were closed with sutures where possible. It was very likely however that these would breakdown given the level of tension the wounds were under. ๐Ÿชก

In a short space of time, it was evident that these wounds were going to breakdown and the skin surrounding them was slowly dying off. This meant along with our Warminster team Lottieโ€™s owner were going to have to manage these as open wounds. ๐Ÿฉธ

There was worry regarding her right hind wounds as these covered approx 50% of limb circumference and therefore risk of limb constriction during healing stages. ๐Ÿค•

After many visits and sedations to clean and dress the wounds we are pleased to say that Lottie is doing great. She has been on very strict cage rest due to her fractured pelvis which is also healing! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

Lottie has basically become famous around HHG for her frequents visits and we are all super proud of her recovery! ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› โ™ฅ๏ธ

๐ŸŒŸ Coney is our next pet of the month! ๐ŸŒŸ

We first met Coney one year ago when he came in for a few issues- the main one being he had eaten part of his toy. Unfortunately, this had to be surgically removed. ๐Ÿšจ

Coney was already showing signs of being very fearful here and was not muzzle trained, so our clinical exams were sadly very limited.
Fortunately, his surgery went very well, and he was able to go home soon after. ๐Ÿก

Understandably Coney then became even more fearful here. When he later presented for his vaccines, we were unable to do these without causing significant stress to all involved.
Instead of just giving him sedation tablets and coming back to restrain him. Coneyโ€™s owner and our vet Lucy decided to build Coneyโ€™s confidence up here and his tolerance to be examined. ๐Ÿ’‰

Coneyโ€™s owner spent a lot of time with Coney muzzle training him, getting him used to our waiting room and consult room, introducing commands to check ears, eyes etc and building trust up with Lucy. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ ๐Ÿฅ

We then progressed to building up his tolerance to handling and trusting that this does not always end in an injection but 9 times out of 10 ends in a big party and food! ๐Ÿฌ ๐Ÿฅณ ๐ŸŽ‰

We were only able to work this hard with Coney because his owner muzzle trained him and therefore Lucy was able to practise skills with confidence. We are now progressing onto further handling, including practising checking his paws and face. ๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿถ

Coney is the most handsome boy and we all love seeing him for his socialisation visits! โ™ฅ๏ธ

Please enquire at reception about socialisation visits. โ˜Ž๏ธ
