Bank holiday Monday is here - and if you're hosting a gathering, it's worth thinking about your pet before the guests arrive 🎈

Busy homes with lots of people, noise and unfamiliar smells can sometimes be overwhelming for dogs and cats.

Make sure they have a quiet room to retreat to, brief your guests not to feed them titbits, and watch for signs of stress - panting, hiding, or unusual behaviour.

🦜 Summer brings its own challenges for pet birds - and they're easier to miss than you'd think.

Birds can overheat quickly in direct sunlight, even indoors near a window. A cage in a south-facing room that's fine in winter can become dangerously warm in July and August. Fresh water needs topping up more frequently in the heat, and some birds will appreciate a light mist to cool down.

🐟 Hot weather can affect pond fish just as much as it affects pets on land – oxygen levels drop as water warms, and algae can bloom seemingly overnight.

- Ensure your pond is deep enough – a depth of 3-5 feet provides cooler zones away from the surface.

- Add extra shade over part of the pond. Effectives options can be shading cloths, and floating pond plants such as water lilies.

- Top up water levels regularly as evaporation increases.

- Hold back on feeding – fish need less food in very warm water.

- A fountain or air pump helps keep oxygen levels up.

With summer holidays in full swing, more people around the house (or different routines while you're out and about) can leave cats feeling a bit unsettled.

🦎 In a heatwave, your reptile could be at risk of overheating –a thermostat can only switch heaters off; it can't actually cool the room down, so once the house warms up, the enclosure simply follows.

To help keep them safe this summer, here’s what we recommend:

- Move vivariums out of direct sun

- Monitor the temperature with a thermometer according to what is safe for your specific species (if you’re unsure, our vets can advise)

- Close curtains before the day heats up

- Add airflow with a fan or aircon aimed across the enclosure (never straight at the animal).

- A frozen bottle wrapped in a towel and placed on a mesh roof helps cool the air – just don't let your reptile touch it directly, as sudden cold can cause shock.

Every species has its own safe temperature range, so what's fine for one reptile could be risky for another – get in touch for advice tailored to yours.

Watch for gaping, lethargy or frantic digging – these are early signs of heat stress. If your reptile seems unusually flat, is struggling to cool down, or you're at all worried, call Molesey Vets on 0208 979 1384
