I’ve done a few talks over the years but on Saturday evening I had the opportunity to speak to an audience that had travelled from far and wide.

I was invited to join my friend and colleague Steve from Rehabilitation and Training for a special Dog Behaviour evening in Moggerhanger Village Hall in Bedfordshire, hosted by Michael Pipe, the founder of The Magnificent 7.

Steve shared his life story and his journey to becoming a dog trainer and later he gave a talk on dog reactivity.

My talk was about the complexities of all things puppy and the importance of getting it right from the start, and how to prevent behaviour issues before they start.

We both rounded off the evening with a great Q & A session covering all things dog.

It was a real pleasure to be part of the event and to share the stage with someone who is both a friend and colleague. A huge thank you to Michael Pipe for bringing it all together and to everyone who came out to listen and support us 😊

Jean Donaldson
Jean is the founder and principal instructor of The Academy for Dog Trainers. The Academy is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
She is a four-time winner of The Dog Writers' Association of America's Maxwell Award and was recruited in 2017 to create Dog Training 101 for The Great Courses.
Prior to turning her attention to companion dogs, her dogs and dogs she trained earned numerous titles and wins in a variety of dog sports, including OTCh, TDX, HIT and FDCh.

Yesterday was a little different from the usual routine…

I had the pleasure of spending time at The Gatehouse, a fantastic drop-in community centre in Oxford that supports people who are homeless, vulnerably housed, on low income, or experiencing loneliness.

I was invited to offer advice around the dogs who accompany guests to the centre — providing support to the charity team and having some lovely conversations with the people and their dogs. It was a great opportunity to share tips on safe interactions, body language, and ways to help everyone feel more at ease — human and canine alike.

The dogs were delighted with the Kongs that I gave them.

I was kindly given permission to take a couple of photos of some of the wonderful dogs I met, which I’ve shared below.

A huge thank you to the team at The Gatehouse for the important work they do, and for welcoming me in.

When your dog thinks he’s auditioning for the next Smurf reboot…

I worked with this gorgeous boy yesterday, and his guardians gave me a heads-up that he had a slight blue tinge to his coat. What they didn’t mention before I arrived was why…

Turns out, he’d found something particularly exciting to roll in the day before on the local sports field — unfortunately for him it happened to be one of the blue line markers used to paint the pitch!

No harm done, thankfully — just a temporary transformation into a very cheerful-looking Smurf dog. A good reminder that life with dogs is never dull 😀
