⚠️❤️ Valentine’s Day Pet Safety Reminder ❤️⚠️
With Valentine’s Day approaching, we would like to remind pet owners of some common seasonal hazards that can pose serious health risks to our pets.
🍫Chocolate (Dogs)
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs. Clinical signs may include vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, tachycardia, tremors and seizures. Dark and baking chocolate carry the highest risk due to higher cocoa content.
🍬Xylitol (Dogs)
Found in some sugar-free sweets, gum and baked goods, xylitol can cause rapid hypoglycaemia and acute liver failure. This is a medical emergency.
🌺Lilies (Cats)
All parts of the lily plant (including pollen and vase water) are highly toxic to cats and can cause acute kidney injury. Even minimal exposure warrants immediate veterinary attention.
Other potential hazards include:
• Grapes and raisins (risk of acute kidney injury in dogs)
• Alcohol
• Decorative ribbon and packaging (risk of gastrointestinal obstruction)
• Scented candles and essential oils
If you believe your pet has ingested or been exposed to any potentially toxic substance, please contact us.
