☀️DONT RISK YOUR DOGS LIFE☀️
Know the signs, start cooling, call a vet

Signs of heatstroke can progress very quickly. It only takes a 2°C rise in body temperature for heatstroke to kick in. Once in heatstroke, your dog can suffer from brain damage or even death in 15 minutes!

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it is vital that you immediately start cooling them down and call a vet for further advice. Getting early advice and treatment is essential to saving a dog’s life. Research has found that in the UK, 1 in 7 dogs that are taken to vets with heatstroke don’t survive, although 98% that are seen early with mild signs are likely to recover.

Keep your dogs safe in hot weather!

It’s looking like it’s going to be a scorching bank holiday weekend, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with what temperatures are safe for your dog☀️🐶

Every year our vets treat hundreds of heat stroke cases and, heartbreakingly, some end in tragedy. Many are unfortunately a result of owners not knowing the dangers of exercising their dogs in temperatures to hot for them to handle.

Heat-related illnesses are almost always preventable. DONT TAKE THE RISK and make sure your pet isn’t overheating in the sun.

Temperatures over 24 degrees will be uncomfortable for most of our dogs, so make sure you are walking them at the coolest times of the day or simply keep them at home and give them some mental stimulation and enrichment things to do instead.

If you think your dog may be suffering from heat stroke, contact your vet immediately! If out-of-hours, find your nearest emergency vet.

⚠️6 SIGNS YOUR DOG ISN’T GETTING ENOUGH EXERCISE⚠️

🔹WEIGHT GAIN 🔹
If your dog has been getting a bit plump lately, it may be an indication that more exercise is needed. Chat with your vet about what diet tweaks you might want to consider while you are also increasing daily walks, play breaks, and general activity.

🔹DESTROYING THE HOUSE🔹
Behavioral problems, and especially destructive behavior, are commonly a result of not getting enough exercise. Many dogs become bored & frustrated if they don’t get enough outdoor exercise and mental stimulation. Letting your pup release that pent-up energy with a long walk with lots of sniff breaks at least once a day may be the only treatment needed.

🔹WITHDRAWN BEHAVIOUR🔹
Some dogs will become very withdrawn and depressed when they are lacking in mental and physical stimulation. However, this can also be a sign of illness, so consult your veterinarian if you are seeing this as a symptom.

🔹HYPERACTIVITY🔹
Dogs that are hyperactive are often exercise-deficient. This is commonly seen in young dogs and energetic breeds. If their energy is not used in a productive way, it will be used for naughtiness. These pooches are begging for interactive exercise time.

🔹EXCESSIVE BARKING🔹
Some dogs that are restless and bark or whine a lot are the vocal versions of hyperactivity—they are just telling you that they need more exercise. Regular outdoor play periods are often the cure to this behavior issue.

🔹STIFFNESS🔹
Just like with people, a sedentary lifestyle—especially in older dogs—leads to muscle loss and stiff and painful joints. Daily exercise helps to maintain muscle tone. Do touch base with your veterinarian to see if a health problem such as arthritis is involved. But even if it is, a daily exercise plan will go a very long way to keeping your dog more limber and able to get around.

⚠️BLUE GREEN ALGAE⚠️

Blue-green algae is most common in non-flowing, fresh water such as lakes, ponds and rivers. Certain conditions such as hot summer weather can cause it to thrive and grow rapidly, forming a ‘bloom’ of blue-green algae on the water. It can also be seen during other times of the year.

Some types of blue-green algae contain toxins which can be highly poisonous and often fatal to pets. It can also cause illness in people if touched or swallowed.

🚨Call your vet immediately if you think your dog has swallowed water containing blue-green algae. The sooner they receive treatment, the higher their chances of recovery 🚨

NOT ALL DOG WALKS ARE THE SAME 🐾

One of the most important parts of safe and enjoyable group walks is making sure the dogs are correctly matched. Every dog has their own personality, energy level, play style and confidence, and putting the right dogs together can make such a huge difference to their happiness and wellbeing.

At Bells & Whistles Pet Services, I take the time to carefully assess each dog before introducing them into group walks. I consider things like temperament, recall, age, energy levels and how they interact with other dogs to make sure every group is suited to one another 🐶

Your dog’s safety, welfare and happiness will always come first 💛
