Squidge The Pidge Update!!

Videos 1 and 2 are from Friday 8th of May.
This was the first time I tried to give him food and water. As you can see, he was very thirsty but couldn't eat for himself yet. He flung seeds all over the place so I ended up opening his beak and putting them at the back of his throat so he'd swallow them. The seeds were soaked in water first for him 🥹

Video 3 was from Saturday 9th of May.
He finally started eating the smaller seeds for himself!! I still had to feed him to make sure he didn't starve but it's a start! 🥳

Videos 4, 5, 6 and 7 are from Sunday 10th May!
This was the last time I had to feed him by hand! As you can see, he's finally getting the hang of if 🥹 By that afternoon, he had eaten half a crushed up Suet Ball off his own back! I cleaned up his wounds with some iodine solution and let him have a little woddle around to see how his broken leg was doing. He was still using his wings to balance but he was doing better. We had a little cuddle in the sun before putting him back in his hutch 🥰

Video 8 was from Wednesday 13th May.
He was FINALLY showing an interest in flying!! 🥳🥳 He can't get much height because his tail feathers hadn't grown back yet but he's trying! He's also not using his wings to limp anymore!! I double checked how long it takes a pigeon's leg to heal and die to their bones being hollow, they can heal as quickly as 5 days!!

Video 9 was from Thursday 14th May!
The splint is off and so is Squidge!! Look at him go!! He's walking fine, his toes are pointing the right way and he's taking off! He still can't get the height or the turning control but as soon as his tail feathers grow back, he'll be flying like a professional! 🥳🥹

Squidge The Pidge Update!!

Once we got him home, I offered him some food and water and I tucked him away in my hoodie that he travelled in to keep him warm. As you can see in pictures 2 and 5, he's missing practically all of his tail. Despite the vets saying to us that his injuries "look like normal juvenile pigeons fighting", we were starting to think he was attacked by a cat or something as he has multiple cuts, is missing his tail and has a broken leg!
We found out about the broken leg the next day when I got him out to feed him (as he was still too young to eat for himself) and I let him free in the aviary for the first time. Instead of flapping/running off like I expected, he collapsed and crawled using his wings...
I looked into it and ended up making him a splint with help from my mum (picture 7) and left him in a sock in a towel donut to stop him putting weight on his leg (picture 8)
A few days later he could stand a lot better using the splint for support (picture 10) 🥳🥳

Everyone, meet Squidge The Pidge!! 🥰

On Thursday 7th May, I found an injured pigeon in the road opposite Co-Op in Barmouth. The vets advised that we leave it where it is to see if the parents come back to feed it.
But the next day, the situation was even worse... The juvenile, injured pigeon had been moved to the town square and was being pecked at by crows. The poor baby had a cut across its chest, couldn't walk, couldn't fly, had its tail pulled out, hadn't eaten, drank or slept and now had wounds in its head from the crows...
Over the last week, I took the baby home, fed them and gave them water and set them up in an aviary to recover from the traumatic experience 🥺
Because he's so young, we can't tell if it's a male or female yet so we have temporarily said that Squidge is a boy until we can tell properly 😅
He has made an insane recovery over the last 7 days and is getting stronger by the day!
