We're so excited to be taking part in the historic Wells Moat Boat Race this year and we'd love to see as many of our clients, pets, friends and families there as possible.

The Wells Moat Boat Race is a much-loved community tradition dating back to 1963, when a simple idea between local young people and Bishop "Jock" Henderson led to one of Wells' most unique and entertaining events. What started with a single volunteer collecting admissions on the drawbridge quickly grew into a spectacle that drew crowds from across the city, with locals and visitors flocking to The Bishop's Palace to watch the action on the moat.

After a break of many years, the event was revived in 2001 through the efforts of the City of Wells Lions Club and 1955 (City of Wells) Air Cadets, and continues today as a fantastic community day out for all ages.

We're incredibly proud to be part of this year's event alongside so many other local businesses supporting our community. Expect plenty of laughs, a little friendly competition, and a wonderful atmosphere in one of the most beautiful settings in Wells.

Come along, bring a picnic, cheer us on, and help celebrate one of Wells' most treasured traditions. We can't wait to see you there!

Slow and steady... but surprisingly adventurous!

This lovely tortoise was recently brought to us after wandering quite some distance from home during the warm weather. While staying with us, he was very happy to demonstrate his excellent dandelion-eating technique

Many people are surprised to learn that tortoises can travel much further than expected, especially on warm, sunny days when they are at their most active.

They are surprisingly strong, determined and skilled at finding gaps in fences and escaping from gardens.

If you own a tortoise, now is a great time to:
☀️ Check fences, gates and boundaries for escape routes
☀️ Inspect outdoor enclosures for gaps or weak spots
☀️ Ensure your tortoise is supervised when exploring new areas
☀️ Consider microchipping if they aren't already

A secure garden to us may look very different from a tortoise's perspective!

Have you ever had an adventurous tortoise that decided to go exploring? Let us know in the comments below

A day in the life of a Consulting Nurse…

We are Nikki, Emma and Claire and we can generally be found in the Consulting Room!

What we mostly think about?
Puppy and kitten development, Post op checks, Diabetes and Renal clinics, Weight charts, Well Pet checks, Nail clips, Blood samples, Dental advice, Dressing changes, Microchips, Pain scoring, Arthritis management, Husbandry and diet advice, Parasite prevention, Behaviour guidance, Confidence clinics and of course, how could I forget… A**l glands!

What you’ll find in our pockets (or at least close to hand!)
Stethoscope, pen, thermometer, clippers, blood tubes, scissors, dressings, some toys and lots of tasty treats to help your pets feel relaxed ( but hopefully absolutely no a**l glands!!)

What we love about our role?
We love talking to people and meeting your pets. Our role is varied and flexible.
We work closely with our lovely Pet Coordinator team.
We are here for advice (telephone or in person) and often act as a first line if you’re unsure whether a vet visit is required.

We love a cuppa, often eat lunch “on the hoof” and look forward to seeing you soon☺️

Ever wondered what happens at Nurture Veterinary Hospital when the lights go down?
✨🌙

For pets staying in the hospital, the care never stops.
Our wonderful Night Nurses, Sam and Becci are the kind hands who look after your pets, ensuring every patient feels safe, comfortable and loved 🥰

• They provide comfy beds (or hidey holes for the cautious ones!)
• They are experts at getting the reluctant patient to eat with warmed up tasty morsels
• They manage complex drug protocols and fluid ratios, ensuring every dose is given at exactly the right time
• Sometimes the best medicine is a gentle groom or a reassuring cuddle

By providing the best care in a stress free environment, Sam and Becci don’t just treat the illness, they care for the whole animal.

Of course, they also liaise with owners and the duty vet, turn into theatre nurses, radiographers, lab technicians or cleaners at a moments notice, when an emergency arrives… and enable the day team to come in the next morning fresh, rested and ready to take on the day!

Here is our Student Veterinary Nurse (SVN) Sophie, demonstrating how to encourage two lovely young puppies, happily onto the scales.

Sophie works full time in the hospital, alongside a day each week at college and lots and lots of studying.

Her role is very hands on and includes many different tasks such as:
• feeding, cleaning and monitoring inpatients
• preparing equipment and support during examinations or minor procedures
• learning to monitor vital signs, place catheters, perform basic wound care and carry out laboratory tests (urine, blood, faecal tests).
• setting up surgical equipment, prepping animals for surgery and maintaining sterile environments.
• helping with client queries, booking appointments and giving basic pet care advice
• updating patient notes, recording treatment and keeping stock organised

Alongside qualified staff and working closely with her Clinical Coach, she completes her clinical skills logs, regular assessments and finally her exams.

There is always a lot to do but Sophie is a great student and we are all incredibly proud of how she rises to every challenge.

She has a soft spot for all animals but particularly loves rats and has several of her own 🥰

We’re delighted to share that our Wells team has achieved the Silver Award for being a Rabbit Friendly Practice .

This accreditation means our practice has been independently reviewed and approved by a veterinary specialist adviser, recognising the high standards of rabbit care, knowledge and welfare we provide.

Rabbits have very specific needs and can often hide signs of illness, so having a team experienced in rabbit health and handling is incredibly important. Our caring team are always looking at new ways to continue improving the care we provide for our smaller patients across both Wells and Weston.

We’re so proud of the whole team for their continued dedication to providing compassionate, high-quality care for every patient — no matter how small

From midnight emergency surgery… to beach days and doggie ice cream!

A few weeks ago, Tilly’s family faced one of the scariest nights imaginable after she suddenly became critically unwell with internal bleeding from a splenic mass. Thanks to emergency surgery through the night by Rachel and Charlotte, Tilly pulled through — and the wonderful news was that her mass was not cancerous.

Now look at her ❤️

Swapping recovery pyjamas for sandy adventures, sea air, and ice cream treats… exactly the outcome everyone was hoping for.

We absolutely love receiving updates like these. Seeing patients back to enjoying life with their families is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Tilly, you look amazing — although we think those windswept beach ears might be our favourite photos yet !

Why we offer 20-minute vet consultations

Because we believe pets and their owners benefit from more time

At Nurture, those additional minutes allow for calmer conversations, more thorough examinations, time to answer questions properly, and a more personalised approach to your pet’s care.

From discussing behaviour changes and long-term conditions to creating tailored treatment plans and building continuity with the same vet or nurse over time, we believe veterinary care should never feel rushed.

Our consulting rooms are designed to feel calm and welcoming, with stress-free handling techniques and plenty of time for your pet to settle naturally — whether that’s on the floor, your lap, or beside the vet’s desk.

When your pet needs urgent care out of hours, familiarity matters

At Nurture Vet Hospital, our clients continue to see our own team for emergency and overnight care whenever possible — the same independent practice that knows you, your pet, and their medical history.

For many pet owners, this means:

• No travelling long distances late at night
• No unfamiliar clinics or teams
• Continuity of care from people who already know your pet
• 24/7 care from our Wells hospital team

We know how stressful emergencies can be. That’s why we believe seeing familiar faces, in a familiar environment, can make all the difference for both pets and owners.

Many practices now outsource their out-of-hours care to external providers, sometimes many miles away. If continuity of care matters to you, it’s always worth checking who you’ll actually see in an emergency.

Independent. Local. Here when you need us most.

Meet Joey and Katnis who were feeling bright, playful and full of mischief not long after their neutering procedures. Wonderful to see them showing no sign of pain or discomfort.

You may notice the calming red lighting in the background of this video a feature of specially designed wellbeing cattery . This is part of our “Red Recovery Mode” – designed to allow our team to observe patients without disturbing their sleep and recovery. Cats cannot see the red light spectrum in the same way we do, helping them rest more peacefully and comfortably during their stay. Quality sleep and reduced stress can make such an important difference to recovery.

We are so pleased to see these two happy kittens bouncing back so quickly
