Creating Boundaries Through Engagement
Bringing a puppy into your home is exciting, but puppies don’t automatically understand how to behave indoors. At Cognitive Canine Clinic, we focus on creating clear, fair boundaries while building true engagement, not just obedience
Why boundaries matter:
Boundaries help puppies feel safe, confident, and calm. When expectations are clear, puppies can relax and learn more effectively.
Creating healthy boundaries at home:
• Set rules early – Decide what’s allowed and stick to it. Consistency builds trust.
• Manage the environment – Use baby gates, pens, and leads indoors to guide choices and prevent mistakes.
• Reward calm, appropriate behaviour – Settling, chewing the right items, and choosing rest are all skills worth reinforcing.
• Teach independence – Short, positive periods alone help prevent future anxiety.
• Guide, don’t punish – Learning happens best when puppies feel safe and supported.
Engagement: Are they really learning?
Training isn’t just about getting your puppy to do something — it’s about ensuring they are mentally present.
At Cognitive Canine Clinic, we encourage owners to look for signs of engagement:
• Soft eye contact and checking in with you
• A relaxed but focused body posture
• Quick responses that show understanding, not hesitation
• Choosing to look at you before being asked
If your puppy is only responding when food is visible or commands are repeated, they may be complying — not learning.
Observe the dog, not just the behaviour.
True learning happens when puppies are thinking, connected, and confident. Watching their body language and eye connection helps you know when behaviours are being embedded, not just performed.
Boundaries + engagement = a puppy who understands, not just obeys.
