Just a little update - we have many horses that are on Full livery as well as the youngsters we take in.

Will is home 🤩 after a fantastic season racing.
Cheeko is loving his loan home down in the borders🥰.
Luca 28yr is a fantastic nanny to the youngsters that come in.
Cushi 25yr doing well not that she approves of her zebra look but definitely keeps the flys off 🤣. - her and Rocky enjoying some grooming.
Roxey loving her spa day she does like to keep her appearance up 😍.
Peaches the most perfect pony every yard needs a peaches she is the most adorable saint of a pony 🥰.

The grass is flying up 🙈🙈. Great advice below

⚠️⚠️Warning - high laminitis risk alert⚠️⚠️
ℹWe are currently experiencing a spike in the number of laminitis cases that our vets are seeing.
😞Many of these horses have no previous known history of laminitis, or known underlying metabolic conditions - but are carrying additional weight.

ℹWhilst laminitis can be caused by underlying conditions such as Cushing's Disease/EMS, research has shown that horses and ponies that gain weight are more than twice as likely to develop laminitis than if they lose or maintain their weight.

⚠️Laminitis is extremely painful and has significant implications. The Royal College report that more than 7% of equine deaths are linked to laminitis, with many animals having to be euthanased.

💡Prevention is better than cure so please put management strategies in place to help reduce increased risk which is often associated with weight control.

✅Ensure your horse/pony is the correct weight/body condition score and if they are not put immediate management strategies in place:
- Restrict access to grass/use a grazing muzzle
- Soak your hay for at least 12 hours to reduce the nutrients and goodness in it
- Avoid foods rich in carbohydrates or rapidly fermentable fibre i.e. cereals, coarse mixes, rapidly growing or fertilised grass.
✅Increase exercise where appropriate and there are no signs of laminitis (beware of excessive work on hard ground and the effects of concussive laminitis)
✅Check digital pulses every day and act accordingly
✅Know the early warning signs and do not ignore them
✅Always seek professional advice

The science behind Frog & Sole Saviour...
Memories of learning organic chemistry make many people shudder but the basics are very simple. When two or more elements combine they form a molecule and carbon is the element that forms the backbone in the vast majority of them. Elements join together by forming bonds and the way they do this dictates their shape and influences the properties they have. In essential oils the molecules within them have a maximum of 20 carbon atoms, so they are very light and hence volatile (this is why they smell, especially if you heat them using a fragrance burner).
Essential oils with oxygen in their component molecules have a stronger scent and if the oxygen is attached to a 'benzene ring (remember them from chemistry?), also known as aromatic compounds, the scent is stronger still.
The properties of the molecules found in an essential oil depends on how and where the oxygen molecule us attached to the carbon chain (the functional group). For instance the oils which have the most microbial activity have a phenol group attached. The oregano essential oil we use in Frog & Sole Saviour contains the phenols thymol and carvacrol, which prevent most microorganisms from growing and kills them. We also add Clove bud essential oil which contains mostly the phenol eugenol, which has a numbing effect as well as antimicrobial.
Another component of frog and sole is Lemongrass which is rich in aldehydes, giving it both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial activity.
Finally we add Eucalyptus which has a high % of the monoterpene oxide,1,8-cineole, which has antimicrobial properties in its own right but importantly it also enhances the pe*******on of all the oils in Frog & Sole Saviour so that they are able to reach the deep seated bugs responsible for infections in the horse's feet.
All of the oils we use in Hedgewitch products have a certificate of analysis, which means the constituents have been analysed using gas chromatography. Quality is incredibly important because it's the individual constituents which give essential oils these incredible healing properties.

Not good on updates 🙈🙈.
Roxey (16yr) one of our full liveries when her owner is away working. We love having her, we have done roxey since she was a 2yr.
Will and Cheeko are back together 🥰, Cheeko has gone on loan down to the borders too 😄.
Yard is very busy with a lot of horses waiting to come in - now the snow and ice is gone for a bit 🤩 they will start to come in.

The yard is starting to look like Christmas - although it is a very hard one with out our girls - We tragically have lost both Pip (Raemoir Hoity Toity) & Gale (Cairnfield Mountain Air). They both loved all the tinsel and lights.
On a very happy note Will (Willsarben 1) has settled in great in his loan home with James and Briony Ewart on the borders. Can’t wait to see Leah and him pony racing.

It’s so important the grass is flying up.

⚠️LAMINITIS ALERT⚠️
❗️The warm weather alongside the rain that we have seen over the last few days means the grass will be growing quickly. As the horses eat it down as fast as it grows, it can be difficult to know how much they are consuming.

Prevention is better than cure and now is the time to be extra vigilant:
• Check your horse’s digital pulses daily
• Keep a close eye on their weight and restrict grazing if necessary
• Speak to your vet about weight management or if you have any concerns
