What should I do on firework nights to help keep my dog calm?.
💥Take your dog for a walk well before fireworks are due to begin.
💥Keep doors, windows, cat and dog flaps closed.
💥Draw the curtains and play music with a repetitive beat to help mask the sounds.
💥If your pet prefers to go away and hide, let them. Leave them alone and don’t try to comfort them – this is their way of coping.
💥If your pet is used to seeking reassurance from you in stressful times, comfort them as you would normally.
This is a short-term solution to help your pet cope while they’re afraid. In the long term, it’s important to give your pet another way to cope – e.g. by providing a den – in case you aren’t there when they’re scared.
💥Stay calm yourself. Keep your tone, mood and behaviour as normal as possible. If you get very anxious or comfort your pet more than usual, this can make your pet more unsettled.
Never punish your pets. It’s not their fault they’re scared and it adds to their anxiety.
💥 Feed your dog a high carbohydrate meal an hour before you expect fireworks can help them feel sleepy. .
💥 Thunder jackets can help them feel secure and safe, it’s too late for this year but look into desensitising tv/radio channels
💥 Adaptil herbal tablets, plug in diffusers and adaptil collars may help.
💥 Pet remedy also a different brand diffusers, sprays and wipes. TIP- Wipes can be tied on to dog collars.
Zylkene are a natural calming, anti anxiety capsules that your pet takes orally.
💥 Sileo (My fave) Latin name for be silent it is a gel that is applied to your pets gums it has a medication that calms the dog down without fully sedating them.
Contact your vet if you feel your pet may benefit from something even stronger they may prescribe diazepam. Never let your vet prescribe Acp (Acepromazine) this is a tranquilliser so your pet will hear the fire works and be scared but won’t be able to move or hide this is very old school!!
