When I work with reactive behaviour, I don’t start by trying to shut it down.

Barking, lunging, and pulling are responses to stimuli, not random outbursts. They’re a dog’s way of coping with something they find difficult, overwhelming, or uncertain.

So instead of asking “how do we stop this?”, I start with:
💚 what is the dog responding to?
💚 what are they feeling in that moment?
💚 what support do they need to cope more calmly?

From there, we build a plan that helps the dog feel safer and more in control, and gives their person clear, practical steps to follow. Not quick fixes, not punishment, just structured, dog-centred training that actually addresses the cause.

Because when you understand the reason, you can change the response.

Calm moments between dogs and children don’t just happen.

They’re built by:
💚 adults guiding the interaction
💚 dogs being supported, not overwhelmed
💚 children learning when to engage and when to give space

This isn’t about expecting children to “just know” or dogs to simply tolerate things. It’s about teaching both how to share space safely and respectfully.

Good training gives dogs the skills they need to cope with busy, unpredictable environments, and gives families the confidence to manage interactions without fear or guesswork.

When everyone understands what’s expected, calm becomes the norm rather than the exception.

It’s the symptom.

Dogs pull because it works. It gets them where they want to go, gives them access to smells, and helps them release energy (especially for friendly, enthusiastic dogs who experience the world at full speed).

Loose lead walking isn’t about strength, control, or finding the 'right' piece of equipment. It’s a skill that needs to be taught clearly and consistently.

When we understand why pulling happens, training becomes calmer, fairer, and far more effective. Instead of battling the behaviour, we can show dogs an alternative that actually makes sense to them.

Pulling doesn’t mean your dog is naughty.
It means they haven’t learned a different way yet.

And that can be taught.

Good training isn’t about making dogs comply.
It’s about helping them understand.

When a dog chooses to stay close, checks in, and moves with their guardian, it’s not because they’re being controlled, it’s because they feel safe, clear, and confident about what’s expected of them.

Control might look effective in the moment, but connection is what creates lasting change.

That connection is built through:

💚clear communication

💚consistency

💚meeting a dog’s needs first

Allowing progress to be imperfect while it takes shape is important.

This is the approach I use in my training. Not quick fixes or rigid rules, but practical, dog-centred guidance that supports both ends of the lead.

Because when you prioritise connection, the behaviour follows and STAYS.

That nose?
It’s not just “good”, it’s genuinely incredible.

Dogs experience the world through scent in a way we can’t even come close to understanding. While we rely on sight first, your dog’s brain is constantly processing smells: who’s been here, how long ago, where they went, and what emotional state they were in.

To put it into perspective:

Dogs have hundreds of millions of scent receptors vs our 5 million

Their brains are wired to prioritise smell over almost everything else

Sniffing isn’t a distraction, it’s information gathering

This matters BIG TIME for training.

When we work with a dog’s nose instead of fighting it, everything changes. Focus improves. Stress reduces. Learning becomes clearer and calmer. Walks stop feeling like a constant battle for attention.

Good training doesn’t mean suppressing natural behaviour.
It means channelling it.

That’s a huge part of how I work, understanding what dogs are built to do, and using that knowledge to create training that actually makes sense to them.

Because when you respect the dog in front of you, progress comes a lot more easily.

What your dog REALLY wants for Christmas 🎄🎁
Let’s be honest…
your dog doesn’t care about the adorable £29.99 plush turkey you panic-bought at Pets at Home.

What they really want for Christmas is:
🎄 Clear boundaries
🎄 Sniffing time
🎄 Predictable routines
🎄 A safe spot when Aunt Linda gets too loud
🎄 Training that actually makes sense to them

If you want to give your dog the best gift this year… give them understanding.
I can help you do that 💚

Christmas Chaos vs Calm Training 🎄🐾

The decorations, the visitors, the food on the counter, the sudden routine changes…
For a lot of dogs, December is basically the Olympics of overstimulation.

But here’s the good news:
Calm is trainable.
Confidence is trainable.
Clear communication is trainable.

If your dog tends to turn into a festive tornado this time of year, we can absolutely help them find their calm again, kindly, clearly, and without shouting over the carols.
