RIDER BIOMECHANCS πŸ‡
Part 3 - Canter

Following on from the trot here is the same lovely rider showing us her canter - likewise the pelvis was key to a successful canter movement strategy

BEFORE
πŸ”΄ leg forward in chair seat

πŸ”΄ pelvis fixed in anterior tilt and jarring through the whole cycle

πŸ”΄ increased lumbar lordosis and rib flare

πŸ”΄ gripping and bracing with the arms

AFTER
🟒 maintained shoulder-hip-heel alignment

🟒 pelvis moving through full range of motion from anterior to posterior tilt to match the horse’s

🟒 neutral thoracic and lumbar spine

🟒 relaxed arms that follow the reins and natural movement

If you have enjoyed this series and would like help with your position and movement strategy in the saddle then please don’t hesitate to contact!

RIDER BIOMECHANICS πŸ‡
Part 2 - Trot

For this lovely rider it all came down to the pelvis

BEFORE
πŸ”΄ leg forward in chair seat

πŸ”΄ pelvis fixed in anterior tilt and arch in lumbar

πŸ”΄ pushing through heels to generate rise

πŸ”΄ bracing through arms and balancing on reins

πŸ”΄ head and neck fixed forward and down

AFTER
🟒 good shoulder-hip-heel alignment
🟒 pelvis moving and controlled through range of motion and generating rise with hip hinge and absorbing force in sit
🟒 neutral thoracic and lumbar spine
🟒 relaxed arms and good rein control
🟒 head and neck in neutral looking forward

Each rider has a unique anatomy and riding strategy so it is really important to have an individual approach to pick apart the rider’s movement strategy with the horse so that we can tailor an program specifically for the rider, rather than the standard heels down, sit up!

CHAIR SEAT πŸͺ‘
Part 1

This is a common position I find riders in but how do we correct it? The answer isn’t simply moving the leg back.

For this lovely (and very experienced) rider we started off with an in-depth assessment on and off the horse. What we found:
πŸ”΄ lack of lumbopelvic dissociation - pelvis fixed in anterior tilt and excessive lumbar arch
πŸ”΄ loss of hip extension
πŸ”΄ initiating movement with the legs rather than the hips and pelvis
πŸ”΄ fixed thoracic spine with rib flare

Corrections we made off the horse first and then in the saddle:
🟒 correct hip hinge pattern - initiating with the hips and taking the pelvis fluidly through anterior and posterior tilt
🟒 restoring hip extension with a neutral lumbar spine
🟒 allowing the knee to flex over the ball of the foot rather than trying to extend to generate movement
🟒 correct timing of weight transference from seat to stirrup
🟒 lifting the thoracic spine and rib cage off the lumbar spine

So the issue is not with the leg at all but rather how her pelvis was moving and absorbing load - the leg is the compensation of the body trying to adapt

Stay tuned to see comparison videos!

Did you know jaw tension can contribute to neck pain in horses?

The masseter muscle sits at the side of the jaw and is connected through fascial lines into the poll, neck, shoulders, and along the topline. When tension is released in the jaw, it can help the fascia soften and move more freely throughout the body β€” improving comfort and mobility from head to tail. ✨🐴

Here is Festina falling asleep to her masseter release πŸ’€

Curious about how acupuncture can help with pain and injury πŸ€•

Used alongside physiotherapy to support pain relief, reduce muscle tension, and promote tissue recovery. By stimulating specific points, it helps modulate pain and improve circulation, creating the right conditions for effective movement retraining and progressive strengthening πŸ’ͺ
