Letโs talk about laminitis and swimming ๐
Swimming is an effective therapy for horses recovering from laminitis because it allows for exercise and metabolic management without placing weight on the damaged hooves.
The primary benefits include:
Zero Weight-Bearing:
Swimming is the only form of exercise that is completely non-weight-bearing, protecting the sensitive laminae from the concussive forces of ground-based movement.
Weight and Metabolic Management:
Managing excess weight is critical for laminitis recovery. Swimming burns high amounts of energy and can significantly reduce blood insulin levels in horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), a common underlying cause of laminitis.
Improved Circulation: The natural resistance of water increases cardiovascular activity, boosting blood flow to the hooves. Enhanced circulation delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to damaged tissues, which is vital for healing.
Muscle Maintenance:
It prevents muscle atrophy (wasting) during periods where the horse must otherwise be on restricted โbox restโ. The waterโs resistance provides a full-body workout that strengthens core muscles and improves overall balance.
Reduced Inflammation:
Cold-water swimming pools or saltwater spas can help manage pain and inflammation in the limbs and hooves through natural cooling.
Mental Stimulation:
Restricted movement often causes stress and frustration in horses; swimming provides a refreshing change of environment and psychological relief.
