What a week!
Grab your Captain Morgan or your cappuccino.
On Tuesday morning the old bird , aka Princess Pearl woke up with a gunky eye which she struggled to open. I could see the eye was white too, so I immediately jumped online to my vets to book an appointment that day. On the appointment form it asks for reason of appointment, I inputted “issue with left eye, unable to open properly, gunky and cloudy, querying dry eye”.
Dry eye is basically the lack of tear production which causes the above symptoms and more. Usually seen in older dogs. Thick green / yellow discharge, inflamed red eye , cloudiness. Although I’ve never had a dog with it before, I’ve always had a keen interest in dogs and human ailments and prescription drugs due to my time as a pharmacy dispenser many years ago.
Her left eye has been a bit more watery this year. Her eye was absolutely fine Monday , (she sleeps on the big bed with me so I’m always prodding and picking at her and feeling her all over much to her disgust), woke up Tuesday morning to a different story.
I’ve always reiterated , you cannot gamble with eyes, it’s straight to the vets. Luckily I did.
Got to the appointment and asked my vet to check her for dry eye (yes I am very forthright with it comes to my dogs). He checked and discounted it, (so I took it on the chin), said the eye was about to burst, and was in a bad way, and ulcerated. 😱 . I had three options.
1. To go in hard with multiple drops and try that
2. Referral to an ophthalmologist vet
3. Remove the eye
I went straight for no 2. No hesitation.
They rang through immediately to the specialist ophthalmologist . Having spoken to them at length and sent various pictures , specialists advised it wasn’t an immediate emergency and that I could attend the following morning.
Yesterday morning we went to our appointment at the specialist ophthalmologist vet. It was an hours appointment and she (the vet) did multiple tests on the eye , using different equipment and drops.
Conclusion…….. Pearl has DRY EYE !!! In both eyes.
She doesn’t need to have her eye removed, it wasn’t a straight blue light into surgery.
She is however having a minor surgery next week on the left eye, just to clear some of the pigmentation that’s formed.
Pearl needs quite intensive care at home until her surgery next week and will do afterwards.
It’s multiple eye drops , multiple times a day as well as pain relief through the day.
The reason for this post is to apologise for the delay in responding to messages.
I’m a one woman band juggling multiple jobs and tasks .
I’m also on annual leave until next Wednesday.
