If you would like to support me throughout my training process and are currently a client of Craig Griffiths, please continue with your regular appointments as usual. Out of respect for Craig as both my mentor and friend, I will not take over any of his clients for my personal business. Instead, I‘d love to learn and work with Craig at your horses usual dental check up. Thank you.

Here’s my certificate of attendance to a CPD event earlier this month, run by Andy Peffers. Andy is a wonderful vet that specialises in equine dentistry and deals with the more advanced cases that occasionally need referring. He is a great support to EDT’s in the area and I am extremely grateful to be included in these training events.

I thought it was about time I updated this page after all the progression that’s gone on this year..

So, I’m finally working with a mentor for my full UK BAEDT qualification! It may have taken two years, but at least I was fortunate to meet many fully qualified equine dentists within that time - in fact, I have met the majority of EDT’s within the North West and some even further afield. Just when I thought it was impossible to continue advancing in this career, thankfully Craig Griffiths took me under his wing! I have now had the opportunity to spend consistent time with him since May this year, and I’m learning more each week. Craig has 20 years experience in equine dentistry and also has the patience of a saint with me 😂 It was worth the wait to find such a great mentor.

I am still continuing with my own clients using manual equipment, but then training on the more advanced motorised equipment when with Craig. All horses I work with get a full dental chart with details of examination and treatment. Clients get a copy of these charts and I also use a copy towards my final exam case logs.

It is advised that owners allow only BAEDT members to complete dental work on their horses, as this is the leading DEFRA approved qualification route for EDT’s. Lists of both fully qualified members and student members of the association can be found at baedt.com - you can find my name under the students section, which also states Craig to be my mentor. Completion of my final exams using motorised equipment will secure my full membership.

My insurance covers category 1 procedures (routine dental work) when unsupervised and category 2 procedures (advanced dental work) when under supervision. I have provided an outline of each category below. If you have any enquiries or would like to book your horse in for a dental (recommended every 6-9 months) just send me a message or give me a call on 07718302317.

Category 1 Equine Dental Procedures:
* Examination of teeth
* Removal of sharp enamel points using manual (hand) floats only
* Removal of small dental overgrowths (max 4mm reductions) using manual rasps only
* Rostral profiling of the first cheek teeth (max 4mm reductions), previously termed ‘bit seat shaping’
* Removal of loose deciduous caps
* Removal of supragingival calculus

Category 2 Equine Dental Procedures:
* Examination, evaluation and recording of dental abnormalities
* The extraction of teeth or dental fragments with negligible periodontal attachment.
* The removal of erupted, non-displaced wolf teeth in the upper or lower jaw under direct and continuous veterinary supervision
* Palliative rasping of fractured and adjacent teeth
* The use of motorised dental instruments where these are used to reduce dental overgrowths and remove sharp enamel points only.

Here’s a copy of my attendance certificate for the Advanced Theoretical Equine Dental Technicians Course, that I attended at the end of August. The course is run by BEVA (The British Equine Veterinary Association) for dental technicians and vets hoping to pass their category 2 dentistry exam with the BAEDT (The British Association of Equine Dental Technicians). Speakers included Veterinarians Rob Pascoe and Amy Taylor, who both do a lot of specialised work in equine dentistry, and also Jess Hughes (a highly respected EDT working throughout Wales).

I’ve kept quiet over the past few months whilst taking the next steps towards my advanced UK qualification with the BAEDT. I completed the ‘Advanced Theoretical Equine Dental Technician’ course back in August, run by BEVA (The British Equine Veterinary Association), and have also been actively trying to find a fully qualified EDT to work alongside and build up my advanced case log. Unfortunately this is still proving to be very difficult, but I am thankful to have spent some time with a few great EDT’s. Amy Morris, Craig Griffiths, and Laura Kenny have all been a massive help and provided me with valuable support, giving me extra reassurance to keep working towards category 2 status. In the meantime, I am continuing with my category 1 work so if anyone requires a routine dental check for their horse/pony just give me a message.

Here is an overview of most aspects involved with gaining my full UK qualification, from the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (the UK's leading Equine Dental association). Thank you to all my current clients for supporting me throughout this process, allowing me to build up my case log and the experience required to sit the exam. On completion of these requirements, I will then be fully qualified to carry out the more advanced dental cases, rather than just routine work. It's going to be a busy and extremely rewarding few years, and I am loving every step of the process!

It may interest you to know what goes on behind the scenes of someone who is becoming BEVA/BVDA qualified.
All our members are required to have passed this exam and none of this includes the massive financial outlay to buy tools and equipment, exam and course fees, hours of unpaid time and travel costs.
It takes a truly dedicated person with a real passion for dentistry to go down this route and join our Association.

For any ponies with dinky heads, especially miniatures, I now have a new 'pony dental spec'. Although my standard size fits a wide spectrum of horse shapes and sizes, I've had a few occasions where pony teeth have come off of the spec because their mouths are so tiny. This new smaller speculum will unsure the little ones have a more comfortable fit, as well as reducing the risk of me losing a finger whilst carrying out their dental exam!

To clear up any confusion, my name has recently changed to Jayney Oakland, and therefore I have changed my business name (from my initials to my new surname). J.L.O. Equine Dentistry is now Oakland Equine Dentistry. All dental charts, business cards, etc. will be changed accordingly. My updated email address is [email protected]. All other details, i.e. phone numbers, have remained the same.

There's got to be something seriously wrong with a horse for it to do this. Major issues with its teeth are a big possibility. Saddens me so much - the amount of suffering animals go through simply because of a lack of human knowledge.
