Got a hyper puppy who bites, zooms, or barks non-stop? It’s easy to assume they’re just being naughty, but most of the time, they’re actually overstimulated, overtired, or bored.

Think of it like a toddler having a meltdown at bedtime 😵‍💫 They don’t need more toys or more play - they need rest, structure, and a chance to reset. Puppies are the same.

Instead of trying to wear them out with more excitement, try helping them calm down with:
🧠 Sniffing games (like “Find It”)
😌 Lick mats or long-lasting chews
📆 A simple routine that includes plenty of sleep and low-arousal downtime

✨ Calm isn’t a personality trait, it’s a skill you can help them build.

MYTH: “My dog is reactive because they’re trying to be dominant.”

❌ BUSTED!
Reactivity is typically not about dominance. It’s about emotions, not hierarchy.

Most reactive behaviour (barking, lunging, growling) stems from:
    •    Fear or anxiety: Your dog feels unsafe or overwhelmed.
    •    Frustration: They want to get to something but can’t.
    •    Over-arousal: Too much stimulation, too fast.
    •    Past experiences: Trauma or poor socialisation history.

Dominance theory has been debunked by modern science. Dogs aren’t trying to dominate, they’re expressing emotions and trying to feel safe and understood.

❤️ Compassion beats control. Your dog is asking for help in the only way they know how 🐕

🐾 A Dog’s Ladder of Communication 🐾

Dogs rarely “snap out of nowhere.” They try to tell us how they’re feeling long before that, but most may not know how to listen.

From subtle signs like turning their head or yawning, to growls and eventually bites, each step is a warning, not bad behaviour.

🔍 Learn the signs. Keep everyone safe 🐾

Is there anything not on this list that your dog is ‘reactive’ towards? 🐶

Good evening!

Nikki will be out of office until Wednesday 12th March ✨ I will still be responding to queries, I do however have limited access to emails and so my response may take longer than usual.

Abigail is still working in the South as usual 🐕

Hope you all are having a great weekend and I will catch up with you all soon 💛

(If you are one of our SA clients, I will still be setting your training plans as usual unless we have discussed otherwise).

You dog’s wellbeing is a top priority, and nobody should make you feel otherwise 🐕

You know the type, the ones who:

- Tell you to let your reactive dog off the lead to sort it out themselves, ‘that’s all they need’.

- Provide unsolicited advice about what you should be doing with your dog.

- Tell you that your reactive dog should be put down.

- Tell you you’re spoiling your dog by giving them too many treats.

- Shout to you that ‘he’s friendly’ and cannot understand why you’re avoiding them.

- The ‘trainer’ that tells you to jerk the lead to train loose lead walking.

- The ones who say ‘it’s just a dog, leave them home alone, they’ll be fine’ when your dog struggles with SA.

Never let anybody make you feel bad for putting your dog’s needs first! 🐾

What would you add to the list? ⬇️

Having a reactive dog can be extremely overwhelming and stressful. Navigating walks becomes a military operation that requires extreme vigilance, skill and sometimes sheer luck! 🍀

There’s a lot of information out there to help reactive dog guardians with what to do to help their dogs, and what not to do.

But there isn’t much information for other dog guardians on how they can also help.

People can be quick to judge and throw shame at the other side, but it’s much more effective to try and help educate everybody instead 🐕

There are many things us non-reactive dog guardians can do to help out reactive dog guardians in making their walks less stressful, for themselves and their dogs 🫶🏼
