Just popping on to say I’m taking a short breather from posting content for the rest of May! ☕️🐾

I want to pour my energy into some exciting behind-the-scenes projects for Positive Steps, and stepping back from content creation gives me the time to actually get them done.

Business will continue as usual.. my inbox and DMs are still fully open for training enquiries, and I’m still out and about working with my clients 🐕

I’ll be back to regular posting in June. See you then!

As dog guardians, it is so easy to misinterpret our dogs’ big feelings. Let’s break down what is actually happening when they react on a walk:

1️⃣ Fear: This is the most common cause of reactivity. Your dog is overwhelmed and trying to create distance between themselves and the trigger. That scary barking and lunging is simply their way of shouting, “Stay away, I’m terrified!”

2️⃣ Frustration: Your dog desperately wants to access something (like another dog to say hello to) but is held back by the lead. That physical barrier creates intense, boiling frustration that often looks exactly like aggression.

3️⃣ Protection:True protective behaviour on a standard walk is actually quite rare, but it is the label we most often default to because of how intense the reaction looks!

Here is the most important thing to remember: Punishing a fearful or frustrated dog will only ever make the problem worse. It simply confirms their belief that the situation is dangerous or stressful.
Understanding the root cause is the only key to truly changing the behaviour.

By the time your dog starts barking or lunging, they’ve already been “speaking” to you for a while.

Reactivity isn’t always a loud explosion. It’s often those quieter, subtle signals: an excessive lip lick, a refusal of their favourite high-value treats, or that intense, hyper-vigilant scanning where it feels like they’ve totally tuned you out.

When your dog is over threshold, their brain has shifted from “learning” to “survival.” This is why those cues they usually know by heart suddenly go ignored - they physically can’t hear you over the noise of their own stress.

If you want to move beyond just managing the “shouts” and start understanding the language your dog is already speaking, our reactivity course is open. We’ll help you decode these signs so you can both feel safe and confident outside again.

The number 1 trick I teach dog guardians to save a walk when a trigger appears👇

There is a massive difference between frantically avoiding a trigger and executing a planned Emergency Turn.

Just “avoiding” usually looks like panic - shortening the lead, holding your breath, and anxiously dragging your dog away. That tension travels straight down the lead and confirms to your dog that there is definitely something to worry about!

An Emergency Turn is different. It is a rehearsed, positive skill. While it is important to note that this is different to actively desensitising your dog to their triggers, management on walks is absolutely crucial.

Practising smooth escapes prevents your dog from rehearsing reactive behaviours like lunging and barking, and keeps their stress levels low enough so they can actually learn.

This is just one of the practical skills we teach in the Canine Reactivity Webinar 💻

Want to learn exactly how to execute this turn perfectly, plus the science behind why your dog reacts in the first place?

Meet Jax, a gorgeous 2-year-old German Shepherd x Husky mix. He’s currently living with some friends of ours who saved him from a really rough start in life.

Because of his background, he hasn’t had much chance to get out on walks or be properly socialised, so everything is quite new to him.

That’s where my girl Harley comes in! Considering how far she has come medically over the past two years, it’s so lovely to see her feeling well enough to pop along for the odd session with me again.
Since Jax hasn’t had much exposure to others, Harley is actually one of the very first dogs he has ever properly met and spent time with. It’s been so rewarding to watch her step up as a mentor 🥰 She’s helping Jax to figure out how to just be a dog and interact calmly, and he’s doing incredibly well 😍

We’re putting in the groundwork right now to set Jax up for long-term success and make sure he is totally ready for his next chapter. Seeing these big steps forward makes me so incredibly proud of them both! 🚀

Walking a ‘reactive’ dog is exhausting. It’s the constant scanning of every driveway, the white-knuckle grip on the lead, and that sinking feeling when you see another dog heading your way.

Most people see a “naughty” dog, but they don’t see the hours of work you’ve put in or the isolation of walking at 5 AM just to avoid the stress.

The truth is, you’re working ten times harder than the person with the “easy” dog, and it’s ok to admit that it’s draining.
You aren’t failing, you’re both just learning a new language together, and that kind of communication takes time to get right.

You’re doing a great job, even on the days it doesn’t feel like it 💛

Having a ‘reactive’ dog can feel incredibly isolating. You aren’t doing it wrong, and your dog isn’t ‘naughty’.. they are just overwhelmed by the world 💛

If you are ready to understand their behaviour and bring peace back to your walks, our Canine Reactivity Webinar is for you.
