CALMNESS & EMOTIONAL REGULATION

If I could give every Schnauzer puppy owner one gift...
It would be a puppy who knows how to relax.

Not because calm dogs are boring.
But because calm dogs make better decisions.

The reality is that many future behaviour problems don't start with obedience.
They start with over-arousal.

A puppy who is constantly excited, stimulated and switched on can easily grow into an adolescent who:

⚠️ Barks at visitors
⚠️ Pulls on lead
⚠️ Reacts to dogs
⚠️ Struggles to settle
⚠️ Finds public places overwhelming

That's why one of the most important things I teach isn't "sit."
It's calmness.
How to settle.
How to switch off.
How to regulate emotions.
How to feel comfortable doing nothing.

Because a Schnauzer who can stay calm in a busy world has a massive advantage in life.

And that's exactly what we build inside my 3 and 6-month 1-2-1 Puppy Programmes.

If your goal is a Schnauzer who can accompany you to cafés, pubs, holidays and family gatherings without becoming overwhelmed, let's chat 📞

Socialisation isn't about meeting everyone.
In fact, that's one of the biggest myths in puppy training.

Many Schnauzer owners are told:

"Let them meet lots of dogs."
"Let them say hello to everyone."

But what happens?
The puppy learns to EXPECT access.
And later that can become:

❌ Frustration
❌ Pulling
❌ Barking
❌ Reactivity

Instead, I focus on teaching social skills.
Skills that help puppies learn:

✔️ How to be around dogs without greeting them
✔️ How to cope around people calmly
✔️ How to welcome visitors politely
✔️ How to settle in public places
✔️ How to make good social choices

The goal isn't a puppy who loves everyone.
The goal is a puppy who can cope with everyone.

And that's where the human end of the lead matters.
Because great social skills don't happen by accident.
They happen when owners understand how to guide their puppy through the world in a way that honours their Schnauzer heritage, personality and temperament.

📞 If you'd like help raising a socially skilled Schnauzer rather than simply hoping for the best, book a Discovery Call to discuss my 3 and 6-month 1-2-1 Puppy Programmes.

Most owners focus on getting attention or trying to distract their Schnauzer.

I focus equally on teaching puppies when to LOOK AWAY.

Why?
Because one of the biggest predictors of future reactivity is a puppy who becomes fixated on everything they see.

Dogs.
People.
Visitors.
Cyclists.
Squirrels.

Many adult reactive dogs aren't struggling because they notice things.
They're struggling because they can't disengage from them.

That's why one of the core skills inside my puppy programmes is teaching Schnauzers:

✔️ Notice it
✔️ Process it
✔️ Move on

Without frustration.
Without conflict.
Without drama.
It's clear and it's a given.

A Schnauzer who can disengage is far more likely to:

🐾 Walk calmly past dogs
🐾 Relax around visitors
🐾 Settle in public places
🐾 Make good decisions

It's a simple skill that creates huge long-term results.
And it's far easier to teach at 4 months than it is at 4 years.

Want to raise a Schnauzer who doesn't feel responsible for everything happening around them?

“What Schnauzers THINK their job is…” 😅

According to most Schnauzers, their daily responsibilities include:

✔️ Monitoring all street activity
✔️ Supervising deliveries
✔️ Alerting the household to suspicious leaves
✔️ Managing visitor arrivals
✔️ Conducting neighbourhood surveillance
✔️ Investigating unexplained noises immediately
✔️ Ensuring nobody walks past the house unnoticed
✔️ Protecting you from dangerous pigeons
✔️ Controlling all dog-to-dog interactions on walks
✔️ Following you to the bathroom for safety reasons, obviously

And honestly?
When you understand what Schnauzers were bred for……it all suddenly makes perfect sense.

Schnauzers were developed to be:

🖤 Alert watchdogs
🖤 Farm dogs
🖤 Ratters
🖤 Environmental observers
🖤 Independent thinkers

They were literally bred to NOTICE things.
The challenge is that modern life gives them WAY more stimulation than they were originally designed for.

Which means some Schnauzers start feeling responsible for:

⚠️ Every sound
⚠️ Every movement
⚠️ Every visitor
⚠️ Every dog
⚠️ Every environmental change

And that’s often where:

➡️ Barking
➡️ Reactivity
➡️ Hypervigilance
➡️ Over-arousal
➡️ Anxiety
➡️ Frustration
can start to appear.

This is why training Schnauzers isn’t just about obedience.
It’s about helping them learn:

🧠 What matters
🧠 What doesn’t
🧠 How to disengage
🧠 How to regulate emotions
🧠 That they don’t have to manage the whole world

Because sometimes your Schnauzer isn’t trying to be difficult…
They genuinely think they’re doing their job. 😅

Owning a reactive Schnauzer can make you feel incredibly isolated.

People talk about the barking.
The lunging.
The chaos.
The “bad behaviour.”

But nobody really talks about what it does to the OWNER.

The overthinking before every walk.
The hypervigilance.
The stress hormones.
The embarrassment.

The constant feeling of being “on edge.”
Or how heartbreaking it feels when:

💔 You can’t take your dog where you imagined
💔 Walks become stressful instead of relaxing
💔 Visitors feel difficult
💔 You stop enjoying things you once looked forward to

And then comes the comparison....

Other dogs calmly walking past cafés.
Other owners chatting while their dogs relax.
Other people saying:

“You just need to train him properly.”
When in reality?

Many reactive dog owners are already trying harder than anyone realises.

And the truth is…
Reactive dogs are often not “bad dogs.”
Many are:

➡️ Sensitive
➡️ Overwhelmed
➡️ Frustrated
➡️ Anxious
➡️ Hyper-alert
➡️ Struggling to regulate emotions

Especially breeds like Schnauzers who are naturally observant, expressive and environmentally aware.

Reactive dog owners don’t need judgement.
They need support.
Education.
Community.
Hope and a Trainer and Community that understands the breed!

👇 If you’ve ever cried, dreaded a walk, or felt completely misunderstood because of your dog’s behaviour… you are not alone.

🐾 Come and join The Schnauzer Training Community where owners support each other without shame or judgement.

These conversations matter because the more owners speak openly about reactivity…...the less shame people feel asking for help.

And honestly?
This post will probably reach another owner sitting at home feeling completely alone tonight.

“Nobody talks about how lonely it feels owning a reactive dog.”

Nobody sees the routes you avoid.
The times you turn around and pretend you forgot something because another dog is coming.
The constant scanning of the environment before you can fully relax.

The dread when someone says:

“Don’t worry, my dog is friendly.”

The embarrassment when your Schnauzer reacts and people stare.
The guilt.
The frustration.
The exhaustion.
And perhaps hardest of all......

The feeling that everyone else seems to have “normal” dogs while you’re managing every walk like a military operation.

Reactive dog owners often end up living in a smaller and smaller world.

Avoiding cafés.
Avoiding busy places.
Avoiding visitors.
Avoiding walks at certain times.
Avoiding judgement.

And what makes it even harder is that many people don’t understand.

They see a barking dog.
But they don’t see the hours of training.
The management.
The worrying.
The love.
The effort.
The tears.

But here’s what I want reactive Schnauzer owners to know:

You are not alone.
And you are not failing.
Some Schnauzers simply experience the world more intensely.
And asking for support is not weakness.
It’s responsible ownership.

👇 If this post hit home, comment:

“Reactive dog people get it.”

Because sometimes the people living this every day are the only ones who truly understand it. 🖤

And please SHARE this post —
not because reactive dogs need more judgement…
but because reactive dog owners need to feel less alone.

🐾 I’d also love to know:
What’s one thing people without reactive dogs don’t understand?
(Your answer might help another owner feel seen today.)
