Bonfire Night and Diwali can be beautiful for us but frightening for our pets.

Every year, missing dog reports in the UK spike by around 81% during these two weeks. Sudden bangs, flashing lights, and unfamiliar smells can trigger panic, even in confident dogs.

✅ Walk before dark
✅ Double-check collars, ID tags, and microchips
✅ Keep leads on during fireworks
✅ Create a calm, quiet space indoors

Nearly 2 weeks since I had my surgery so I wanted to give you a little update as I've had a lot of messages asking how I am doing ❤️‍🩹

I was recovering well until last Monday I went to see my horse Mr Kipps for the first time post surgery.

Unfortunately he was not doing well and was showing signs of a lot of pain so I called the vet immediately.

He had a stage 3 colic which resulted in me sleeping in a stable next to him for 4 nights as I couldn't sleep without hearing him and knowing he was ok.

Daily vet visits for vital checks, sedation, scans and internal examinations as he had a displaced colon and distended small intestine, as well as 4 days of no food.

The vet said most owners would have put him down on the first day, but I just knew he wasn't ready to go and the fact I'm not working at the moment means I could take care of him.

It's been a long slog and we are not out of the woods yet. He's still on 4x daily feeds, exercise and hand grazing.

We tried some turnout yesterday and this morning but ended up calling the vet back today as he wasn't himself. He's fine but no grass yet.

Then yesterday Nelly had some blood in his urine, so he is also on antibiotics for an expected UTI.

I'm incredibly grateful to have had Helen, Becky and Jamie all helping me during this time to make sure all of the animals are well looked after.

I'm starting back with some walks on Friday and I have healed ok from my operation, despite the lack of rest.

I also appreciate everyone's messages to check in on me ❤️‍🩹 as long as my animals are ok, I'm ok 🐶🐴

Acorns and conkers can be toxic to dogs.

Both contain substances that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, more serious illness if eaten.

Even if not swallowed, chewing them can irritate the gut or cause blockages.

That’s why during autumn walks, I always choose routes that avoid heavy fall zones and keep a close eye on what dogs are sniffing or mouthing.

This is one reason we only walk a maximum of 3 dogs at a time, because we don't have eyes in the back of our heads!

Prevention is the simplest form of care. 🍂
