Rosie has been in with us for a dental today! Before that she enjoyed a nice chilled nap in our walk in kennel 🥰

🐶 This lovely girl might have had a fair few of her 42 teeth out but that’s not gonna stop Rosie from chowing down on some Royal Canin Gastrointestinal food!

Gastrointestinal food is really gentle on your pets stomach and also has essential nutrients so is a great first meal following their procedure and while they’re in recovery. It’s also a great alternative to their normal diet if they’re experiencing an upset tummy!

On Friday we had the adorable Oreo🐈‍⬛ in with us for castration and microchipping.

He was such a sweet brave boy the entire day, and wanted lots of fusses before and after his anaesthetic, which we were happy to oblige and were thanked with many head bumps and biscuits.🥰

Please get your pets microchipped as soon as you possibly can, it is not only the law for both cats and dogs now but it will also give you that extra peace of mind and security. They can be microchipped under anaesthetic during their neutering procedure if you prefer!

‼️Heatstroke warning‼️

While we get to enjoy a lovely sunny bank holiday weekend please keep an extra eye on your pets in the sun. It is not just the hot concrete you need to be mindful of, with the increased temperatures there is an increased risk of your pets suffering from heatstroke.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency and if your pet is showing signs you should contact a vet immediately.

Please be aware of the signs and symptoms of heatstroke below:

🔆Excessive panting: Heavy or continuous breathing, even after rest.
🔆Discolouration: Bright red or pale gums and tongue.
🔆Physical signs: Excessive drooling, thick sticky saliva, or vomiting.
🔆Behaviour changes: Lethargy, confusion, wobbly movements, or collapse.
🔆Severe symptoms: Muscle tremors, diarrhoea, and seizures.

If your pet is showing any of the above signs take these actions immediately:

✅Move to a cool area: Get them out of the sun, move them into the shade, or place them in an air-conditioned room.
✅Start cooling, slowly: Pour room-temperature or cool (not ice-cold) water over them. Do not use ice or freezing water, as this can cause shock and constrict blood vessels, trapping heat inside.
✅Encourage air movement: Use a fan to circulate air over them to aid evaporation.
✅Offer water: Provide small amounts of fresh drinking water, but do not force them to drink.
✅Call the vet: Contact your emergency veterinarian immediately for guidance and to let them know you are on your way.

🚨BEHIND THE SCENES EXCLUSIVE🚨

For Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month, we wanted to share an exclusive look at the care and skills our nurses here at White Cross Vets Bloxwich provide for your pets. 🐶🐱🐰

This video honestly doesn't even scratch the surface of the abilities and knowledge being a veterinary nurse requires; however, we hope this brief behind-the-scenes video is enlightening.

Cheese is one of our CCC's, Chloe's cat, who came into the practice last week for very stinky breath😷 and dribbling. Our vets determined that an X-Ray of his teeth was the best practice in this situation to get a better look at the bones for any bone loss or tooth resorption. 🩻

Not only did we get a good look at what was going on with his teeth, but we also made a couple of interesting discoveries. Cheese has a supernumerary tooth (an extra tooth) and a geminated tooth (double tooth).

Stick around to the end of the video to see what these look like on an X-ray.

🧐Does your pet have an interesting abnormality? Please share it with us in the comments below!

🐇The beautiful Rosa is our Star Pet of the Month for May! Her lovely owner brought her in to us a couple of weeks ago as she had found a lump on her flank/mammary area. It was decided that she would be admitted to have the mass removed as a best practice.

Overall the risk of anaesthetic is generally low overall, but for rabbits the risk is higher than with dogs and cats. Rabbits don't need to be starved before procedures involving anaesthetics and should not go more than 6 hours without food.

Rosa was absolutely perfect during her anaesthetic, she was kept toasty and warm by a nurse (which is especially important for rabbits) who was also constantly monitoring her vitals🩺. When in recovery a nurse sat with Rosa and made sure she had some food by syringe which she happily lapped up.

Well done Rosa, and thank you for being a perfect patient!❤️
