🐾 Flea Awareness Notice for Our Clients 🐾
With the milder weather we have been experiencing, we are unfortunately seeing an increase in fleas on dogs arriving at the salon. Fleas are much more active in warmer conditions and can spread quickly between pets if not treated.
Fleas can be picked up almost anywhere and by any animal. Dogs can pick them up from walks, parks, gardens, or even from wildlife and other animals passing through, such as rabbits, cats (especially strays), hedgehogs and other animals cutting through gardens. Keeping your dog regularly treated helps protect them even when these encounters happen.
We kindly ask all clients to ensure their dogs are kept up to date with flea prevention treatments. Spot-on treatments are often the most effective, as they can last up to 8 weeks depending on the product. Many flea tablets available in pet shops will kill fleas currently on the dog but usually only work for around a 24-hour period, meaning they do not provide long-lasting protection. Veterinary flea tablets can last longer, depending on the brand prescribed.
Due to the increased number of dogs arriving with fleas, an additional charge will now apply if fleas are found during your dog’s appointment. This is because we must immediately use a specialist flea shampoo to kill fleas on the dog and then treat the salon with flea control products. We also need to carry out a deep clean and rearrange appointments to allow the products time to work before another dog can safely enter the salon.
Please also note that dogs found with fleas should be wormed again, as fleas can carry tapeworms. When dogs are bitten by fleas they often lick or chew themselves and may swallow the flea, which can allow tapeworms to enter their digestive system.
If your dog does have fleas, it is also important to treat the home environment. Washing bedding, blankets and soft furnishings on a 60°C wash will help kill fleas and their eggs, and using a suitable household flea spray will help treat areas that cannot be washed, such as carpets, sofas and cracks in flooring.
If anyone needs advice or has questions about flea treatments, suitable products, or the correct treatment for their dog’s weight, please feel free to send us a message. We are trained to advise on which products are suitable and are always happy to help.
Keeping your dog regularly treated helps protect your pet, other dogs, and our salon environment.
