I saw a comment yesterday, which I thought was a perfect way to describe the grass... 'Felt like I was walking across cornflakes' 🤣

This lack of rain not only impacts on grass and hay it also impacts on feed costs 😞 it certainly has a knock on affect; so if the heavens could open (preferably overnight) it would certainly be appreciated 😉

Who's still feeding hay?

Didn't we all spend winter dreaming about those lush summer fields and a few months without eye-watering hay bills?

Instead... the fields are looking tired, the grass has packed its bags, and the hay nets are still full.

And then I read a post asking if anyone is actually watering their fields... 🤯

Watering. Fields.

Didn't we have one of the wettest winters ever? Has Mother Nature used up all her water already?! 😂

I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or start dancing round the field in the hope the rain gods take pity on us.

Farmers have had such a tough time with the weather over the last few years, and I know it's affecting everyone. But I don't think any of us imagined we'd still be counting hay bales in the middle of summer.

Come on, British weather... we're not asking for much.

Just a nice steady bit of rain... preferably overnight... followed by sunshine during the day.

Is that really too much to ask? 🌦️🐴

If you get rain water in your tub, simply tip it out and the salt lick will be fine. You can also give your Salt Lick Tub a quick scrub under the tap to freshen it up, especially if your horse is not using it much or it gets dusty in the stable 🌧

Once your horse has finished licking all the salt, you are left with a handy feed tub! This can be reused for feeds, storage, water bowl, washing up bowl, etc.

All horses should have free access to plain salt to provide a top up of sodium and salt lost through work and sweating in warm weather. Your horse might go months without using the salt lick, but don't take it away - one day they need and will use it 🙏

Well, I'm finally packing up and heading off to Dorset!
My poor feed shed has been emptied and just a few rogue shaving flakes are tumbling across the driveway, to remind me of what was 😞

Hoof & Hound Feeds are slowly finding their feet and I can't thank all of my customers enough in supporting Jesse Smith in his new venture!

I'm excited for Hooves & Hounds Dorset & Somerset to launch, along with Hooves & Hounds Holidays (just in time for any last minute Summer Holidays that haven't been booked! bring your dog, horse and other half... if you want 😆) and obviously some cake & scone baking should Keith Rudge get his way 😉
Sounds like I will be busier than ever!

Did you know that during hot weather, the average daily water intake of a 500kg horse can increase from around 2 buckets to as many as 6 buckets per day?
Don't worry... we're not suggesting our Shetland friend needs all six buckets! That's the recommendation for a 500kg horse.
Water requirements can increase even further depending on workload and humidity, so make sure your horse always has access to plenty of fresh, clean water.
