🐾 Puppy Hygiene vs Puppy Socialisation–Why Modern Advice Has Changed
Hx people were told that puppies should be kept away from visitors/dogs/new environments until fully vaccinated
We now know this approach creates a much bigger problem
🧠 Critical socialisation period = around 3 weeks until approximately 12–14 weeks
During this time, puppies are biologically primed to learn what is safe, normal & non-threatening in their world
Experiences during this window have a huge influence on confidence&behaviour later on
This critical learning period overlaps puppy's immunity&vaccination period
Hx disease prevention was prioritised over socialisation
However, veterinary behaviourists now know that behavioural problems caused by inadequate socialisation has lifelong consequences. The AVSAB states - the risk of behavioural issues from poor socialisation outweighs the risk of disease when puppies are socialised carefully & safely
✅ Modern advice is not "ignore hygiene"Instead, it's:
Socialise early / positively & safely
so that puppies:
🐶 Meet healthy, vaccinated adults&children
🐶 Experience different sounds, surfaces, sights, smells&environments
🐶 Be gently handled by trusted people
🐶 Meet calm, vaccinated dogs
🐶 Travel in cars, prams, slings, or carriers to observe the world
While still:
🧼 Practising good hygiene
🧼 Avoiding high-risk areas used by unknown dogs
🧼 Ensuring visitors wash hands if handling very young litters
🧼 Avoiding contact with sick animals
🧼 Following veterinary vaccination guidance
Research shows that puppies exposed to positive experiences during the socialisation window are more likely to grow into confident, resilient adults, while those who miss this period are at increased risk of fear, anxiety&behavioural problems later
The goal isn't isolation/It's safe exposure
A well-socialised puppy isn't the puppy who meets everyone. It's the puppy who learns that the world is safe & predictable
🐾 Good hygiene protects physical health
🐾 Good socialisation protects emotional & behavioural health
Both matter

Breed specific advice
🐾 Yorkshire Terrier

Tiny Dog. Big Personality

🔥 Hook

Yorkies aren’t “bossy.”
They’re confident, alert little terriers with strong instincts.
And when those instincts aren’t guided, that confidence can quickly turn into noisy, reactive behaviour

🧠 What People Get Wrong

Because Yorkies are small and cute, people often assume:
• They don’t need training
• They’re just lap dogs
• Barking is “just what they do”
• They can’t walk far
• Carrying them everywhere is fine
But Yorkshire Terriers were originally working dogs bred to hunt rats

That means they are:
• Brave
• Alert
• Intelligent
• Energetic
• Determined
They’re not delicate ornaments.
They’re tiny terriers.

🌿 What a Yorkie Actually Needs
✔ Clear, consistent boundaries
✔ Calm leadership
✔ Regular walks (on their own legs)
✔ Mental stimulation
✔ Opportunities to sniff and explore
✔ Time to rest and decompress
Carrying them everywhere can actually increase insecurity and reactivity.
Confidence grows when they’re allowed to move through the world calmly and safely

🚨 Common Behaviour Challenges
• Excessive barking
• Lead reactivity
• Resource guarding their favourite person
• Jumping up
• Difficulty settling
• “Small dog syndrome”

Most of these behaviours develop when a small dog is overprotected, overstimulated, or given inconsistent boundaries

🫁 Nervous System Insight

Yorkies are incredibly alert to their environment.
If the home is loud, rushed, or emotionally intense, they often become hyper-vigilant.
When leadership is calm and predictable, they relax and feel safe

Even small dogs benefit hugely from:
• Slow movements
• Clear routines
• Calm greetings
• Predictable expectations

🐶 Leadership Close

A well-led Yorkshire Terrier is:
Confident
Playful
Brave
Deeply loyal
They may be small, but they thrive when treated like the capable little terriers they are.
Structure builds confidence.
And confident dogs are calm dogs

🐾 The 3-Second Rule – Why Timing Changes Everything in Dog Training

One of the biggest mistakes I see?
People reward too late.
And when timing is off… learning becomes muddy.
Let’s break it down 👇

🧠 Dogs Learn by Association

Dogs don’t understand what you meant to reward.
They associate the reward with whatever they were doing at that exact moment.

If your timing is off, you may accidentally reinforce:

Breaking position
Jumping up after a sit
Looking away from you
Tension on the lead
They’re not being stubborn.
They’re being logical.

⏱ The 1–3 Second Window

For clear learning, you must reward within 1–3 seconds of the behaviour you want.

Not after they:

Stood up
Looked away
Sniffed something else
Pulled forward
Timing = clarity.
Delayed praise = confusion.

❌ Why Delayed Praise Confuses Dogs

Imagine this:

Your dog sits. You fumble for a treat. They stand up. You say “Good boy!” and give the treat.
What did you just reward?

👉 Standing up.

That’s how unwanted behaviours accidentally grow.

✅ Use a Marker Word (“Yes!”)

A marker bridges the gap between behaviour and reward.
When your dog does the right thing:
Say “Yes!” immediately.
Then deliver the reward.
The marker tells your dog: “That. That exact moment. That’s what I like.”
It creates precision.

🔁 Consistency Builds Understanding

If sometimes you reward quickly… And sometimes you don’t… And sometimes you’re distracted…

Your dog can’t build a clear pattern.
Clear timing + consistency = confident dogs.

The Takeaway

Training isn’t about being louder. It isn’t about being stricter.
It’s about being clear.
And clarity lives in those first 3 seconds.
