Friday focus….keeping things simple!!!
If you are feeding a few different feeds and supplements, to target a specific area/areas of concern, do you know what is working and what is not?!
I come across this frequently and often see up to 10 items going into feed buckets between feeds and supplements - sometimes more!! I completely understand why, particularly when we are trying to target something specific; we all want to do the best for our horses and ponies.
There are feeds and in particular supplements for almost every health issue you can imagine, so it can be very easy to get caught up in trying lots of different things. The issue then of course is that if there is a slight improvement, we are worried to change anything in case one of the feeds or supplements being fed has made a difference. It is a viscous circle and we can spend a small fortune, which is often completely unnecessary.
Please also keep in mind that your management will more than likely have had an effect too, not just what you are feeding!
My advice would always be to strip it right back to a basic, nutritious, balanced diet and build on that if it is required. The only way you are going to find out what is working and what is not, is by doing just that.
Please do some research before you buy and if a feed or supplement sounds too good to be true, then it most probably is!!
