Molly is off to China to teach Chinese vets about rabbits next week- but we are thrilled to announce that Athin who many of you will remember from St Helens will be covering for her.

Athin has spent the past four years at the University of Edinburgh undertaking a residency in exotic pets. He is a very experienced vet and we can’t wait to work with him again!

Please be aware there are two sets of roadwork traffic lights between the M60 and Urmston (Barton Road and Crofts Bank Road). These are causing delays in the area.

Unusually we’ve not had any students with us this week, they are all studying hard in their colleges.

However, we have had Charlotte with us. Charlotte qualified from Nottingham Vet School in 2024, and works in Derbyshire. She wants to do an internship in exotics, and ultimately become a specialist.

Her favourite animals are rabbits, so she’s been in the right place this week!

Today is World Veterinary Day. This is to promote the wide roles that veterinarians play, including in food and health, as well as looking after your pets.

The logo has many species on it. We’re not claiming to have treated all of these (no whales or camels, yet). But we have treated around 60 different species since we opened a year ago.

Today is the first anniversary of opening the practice! The year has really flown by.

We now have over 2,000 clients, and although nearly half of our patients are rabbits, we see around 25 different species a week. Lots of different birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as a range of small mammals.

We’re grateful that we have such a great team, who all help to make The Exotic Animal Vets a real success.

There are doughnuts available for anyone who has an appointment today!

Edinburgh Vet School student Leo has been with us this week. Leo is from Northern California.

He is a clinical student on the 4 year programme as he already has a college degree from the US.

Leo really loves ferrets, although they have been illegal to keep as pets in California since 1933!

He is going to be back with us again in December, so you may see him then.

Molly is at ICARE 26 this week, a conference specifically for exotic animal vets.

She is a member of the scientific committee for the Association of Exotic Mammal Vets (AEMV) and has been chairing sessions. It’s also been a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues. The exotic vet community is very much one big family!

This week we’ve had a vet from Taiwan visiting us, on her way to an international exotics conference, ICARE 2026, in Lisbon.

Olivia has previously translated for Molly on a course in China, and is doing so again for a conference next month. She is also part of the team that translated Molly’s book, The Textbook of Rabbit Medicine, into Chinese.

Olivia said ‘The Exotic Animal Vets is a very friendly practice, and the team are just like one great family’.

This week we’ve had three vet students!

(L to R)

Tanica is a 4th year at the new Harper Keele Vet School, and her favourite animals are whales.

Izzy is a final year at Bristol Vet School, and her favourite animals are octopuses. She’s hoping to be a zoo vet one day.

And Emma, who’s been with us for 2 weeks, is a final year at Liverpool Vet School. She is a mature student, having already completed a bachelor’s and master’s degree. This week is her last ever EMS before qualifying. Her favourite animals are African Wild Dogs, which she has seen in the Kruger (South Africa).

Tanica has been with us before, but our tally of vet students now stands at 42 since we opened.
