How does my process for boarding work?
Having taken the opportunity to work with dogs exhibiting behavioural challenges within a boarding environment, I have developed a structured and adaptable process to ensure each dog’s unique needs are met effectively.
Initial Information Gathering:
The process begins with a brief form designed to collect contact details and essential background information about your dog. This helps me prepare appropriately for the next steps.
Home Visit (Free within Wirral):
Next, I offer a free home visit (fuel cover required for outside this area) to meet your dog in their familiar environment. During this visit you can cover any behavioural needs. I also discuss key aspects of their care routine (husbandry) and gather any relevant details about the food and products you use.
Paid Trial Sessions:
Following the home visit, we can schedule paid trial sessions and arrange for your dog be dropped off at my premises to begin the integration process. The first trial typically lasts up to three hours, which is long enough to help your dog settle in without causing stress or overwhelm. Feedback is generally positive and we aim to work with you and your dog to help transition to their stay under the care and guidance of qualified professionals.
Ongoing Assessment:
After the initial trial, we’ll assess how well your dog is adjusting and plan further trials with longer durations based on their individual needs and the length of the intended stay. Shorter stays may require fewer trials, while longer ones might benefit from a gradual introduction. The advancement of trials is tailored to your dog’s behaviour and comfort level, and trials for overnight care are recommended once we know the dog has properly settled.
Next Steps After Completing the Integration Process:
Once your dog has successfully completed an overnight trial, you can begin preparing for their full boarding stay. For short stays (fewer than three days), an overnight trial is generally not required. You will receive a boarding contract that outlines all essential care information and serves to register your dog for licensing purposes.
Professional-led and Welfare-Focused:
It’s important to understand that successful integration is not just about the setting itself, but about the skills and experience involved in managing it. The process relies heavily on the ability to carefully structure and adjust the environment to keep stress levels low and ensure your dog feels safe and supported. While much of this work happens behind the scenes, every decision is intentional and welfare-led. Owners may not see every step, but you can be confident that we aim to maintain high standards of care and a choice-based, respectful approach with your dog.
