Turtles could be the KEY to preventing and fighting cancer in humans! 👇

A new study, led by University of Nottingham using decades of health records from turtles here at Chester Zoo and around the world - has found that cancer is incredibly rare in these amazing reptiles 🐢

Why are turtles so resistant to cancer? They have strong natural defences, a slow metabolism that puts less stress on their bodies and special genes that help protect them - helping some live to more than 150 years old!

By studying turtles, we could learn how to prevent or fight cancer in people and discover secrets to healthy ageing 💚

What better way to celebrate World Giraffe Day than by looking back at one of our FAVOURITE moments from last year – the arrival of little (now not-so-little!) Edie 🦒 Full of personality from day one 💛

This September, you can make a difference for these awe-inspiring animals.

Join us at our special event, Run for Nature, where you can take part in a fun run, a 5k or a 10k, all in the name of raising vital funds to help us to protect the endangered Nubian giraffe, whose numbers have plummeted due to habitat loss, poaching and human conflict. All proceeds will go directly to supporting essential conservation work in East Africa and here at the zoo through the international breeding programme - helping to secure a future for this incredible species. Endangered Maccoa ducklings have hatched for the first time EVER at the zoo, a breeding breakthrough for one of Africa’s rarest ducks!

Just 5,000 remain in the wild, so these little guys are kind of a big deal 💚
