Yesterday was a long day.
A late finish owing to a request to help a lovely, large breed dog to cross Rainbow Bridge. He lived his whole 12 years with a dedicated family in NW London, and had heard of Sunset PetCare from their vet practice.
Mr Z (as we’ll call him) was a gentle giant by now (though I wouldn’t have wanted to cross him, in his more youthful years, judging by the photo of him on the side!)
Despite having not moved from his position on the lounge floor for a few hours, he still managed a brief tail wagg, and what genuinely looked like a smile, when I entered the family home.
I’d already chatted to the family about what was going on with Mr Z, and had reviewed his vet notes.
It was clear the whole family loved Mr Z, and were really upset at losing him.
We chatted, did what had to be done with all 4 family members gathered round him, stroking him, talking to him, reassuring him. We then sat in silence for a few minutes whilst his family played with his ears, tickled him under his chin, and the other things which made their bond so special.
I’ll be arranging the cremation of Mr Z, and returning his ashes to his home just as soon as I can.
What struck me about this visit was the gratitude shown: despite what we had just done, within 20 minutes, the family were kind enough to send me a thank you text. And yet I’m the one who should be thanking them: for allowing me to be there at this important time.
Another star shines brightly in the night sky. Rest easy Mr Z.
