🛎 On Duty: Meerkat Lookout! 🛎

Ever wondered why one little meerkat is always standing tall while the rest are busy foraging, sunbathing or playing? That’s the meerkat sentry, and yes, it’s their turn on guard duty! 👀

What’s the job?

This brave meerkat is keeping watch for predators, sounding the alarm with a sharp bark or chirp if danger approaches. They’ll often climb to the highest point they can find, like a rock or a platform in their enclosure.

But don’t worry, they all take turns!

Meerkats rotate roles to make sure everyone gets time to eat, rest and play. It’s teamwork at its finest. Cooperation is key in meerkat society!

Did you know?

Meerkats have excellent eyesight, with dark patches around their eyes that help reduce sun glare, just like built-in sunglasses 😎. Perfect for a lookout!

Watch them in action during our Meerkat Presentations at 12:00 and 15:30 daily (April–October)! Your adventure awaits…

🦉REVEAL TIME!🦉

Yesterdays mystery guest was… the Bengal Eagle Owl!

Say hello to our stunning resident owl, whose golden-orange eyes and striking feather tufts have made him a firm favourite here at the park.

Fun Fact from Phil, our Bird Keeper:

“Bengal Eagle Owls have incredibly powerful talons and can swoop down silently thanks to the unique shape of their flight feathers. They’re top nocturnal hunters, able to catch prey in total darkness!”

These owls might look fierce, but they play a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced by controlling rodent populations.

IGUANA FACT FILE!

Did you know? Green Iguanas aren’t always green! These tree-dwelling reptiles can be bright orange during breeding season, especially the males!

Native to Central and South America, they’re expert climbers and swimmers, using their long tails for defence and their sharp claws to grip branches.

At the park, our Green Iguana Lionel enjoys basking under UV lamps, munching on fresh greens, and occasionally giving Jack (our Reptile Keeper) the side-eye from a high perch!

Top Tip: Look closely at their throats-you’ll spot a dewlap, a flap of skin they use to communicate by bobbing their heads. It’s their way of saying “This is MY branch!”

You can find him inside the tropical house near the Meerkats.

Learning about reptiles helps us appreciate the incredible adaptations animals use to survive.

When it’s scorching outside, our emus know exactly what to do…

They head straight for the hose!

A good soak isn’t just refreshing for our animals it’s essential as it cools them down and stops them over-heating. (You've probably seen the our wolves enjoying the hose from time to time...)

Forget the Maldives, our emus are living their best spa life right here in North Devon!

Happy International Day of the Cotton-top Tamarin!

With their fluffy white “mohawks” and curious nature, cotton-top tamarins might look like tiny rock stars of the rainforest, but these little primates are critically endangered, with fewer than 7,500 left in the wild.

Found only in the forests of northern Colombia, they play a vital role in keeping their ecosystem healthy, yet their homes are disappearing fast due to deforestation and the illegal pet trade.

At Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park, our cotton-top tamarins aren’t just adorable, they’re ambassadors for their wild cousins. By learning about them here, you’re helping us support global conservation efforts, including important work from our friends at Proyecto Tití, who are protecting tamarin habitats, working with local communities, and inspiring the next generation to care for these rainforest treasures.

💡 Did you know? Cotton-top tamarins weigh less than a packet of biscuits, yet they can leap over 4 metres in a single bound!

Today, we’re celebrating International Wolf Day and our Hudson Bay wolves are having a splash-tastic time 💦

Did you know? Enrichment activities like this help stimulate our animals mentally and physically, which is essential for their wellbeing. Whether it’s scent trails, frozen treats, or a refreshing hosepipe splash, every experience is designed to mimic their natural behaviours and encourage curiosity!

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨

One of our dinosaurs staged a daring “great escape” yesterday, briefly leaving the Dinosaur Domain for a cheeky stroll.

Our keeper team quickly rounded up the mischievous culprit near Ilfracombe harbour and no harm was done, except to a few unsuspecting shrubs. We suspect he fancied a swim, as the weather has been so lovely!

He’s now safely back home, plotting his next adventure… from behind the fence. 😉
