The British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council has recently shared the following advice which also relates to gulls here on the island.

“Every year, large numbers of healthy young gulls are unnecessarily removed from the wild by well-meaning members of the public who are simply trying to help. We completely understand that instinct, seeing a young bird alone on the ground can be worrying ❤️

In many cases though, their parents are usually nearby, continuing to feed, protect and watch over them. If a healthy gull chick is in immediate danger, such as beside a road, it is often best to simply move them a short distance to a safer nearby location such as a flat roof, sheltered area or secure garden, allowing the parents to continue caring for them naturally.

Once a healthy chick is taken away from its parents, it often has to be raised in captivity unnecessarily, placing additional pressure on already stretched wildlife rescue services during the busiest time of year.

So when should you intervene?

✅ If the chick is visibly injured, weak or unwell
✅ If it has been caught by a cat or dog
✅ If it is a very young nestling in immediate danger, such as near a road or exposed to other hazards

When should you leave them where they are?

❌ If the bird is alert, mobile and otherwise healthy
❌ If parents are not immediately visible, gulls may only return periodically to feed
❌ If adults are swooping nearby, this is usually defensive parenting behaviour and a sign young birds are close

The kindest thing we can often do is observe from a distance and allow wild parents to continue doing what they do best.”

We have so many dogs looking for their forever homes right now… could one of them be your perfect match? 🐾🏡 Please share to help these lovely dogs find the families they deserve ❤️

🐕 Achilles – 3 year old male Dutch Shepherd.
A super smart, loving boy who would thrive with someone who understands shepherd breeds. Achilles can live with other dogs and older children (12+). He’s loyal, affectionate, and ready to be someone’s best friend.

🐶 Pluto – 7 year old Bloodhound x Collie.
A giant sweetheart who absolutely adores people and affection. Pluto would need to be the only pet in the home as he doesn’t like other dogs, but he has more than enough love to give his humans 💛

🐾 Marty – 10 year old mixed breed.
Don’t let his age fool you, Marty is full of life and energy! He loves a good walk, enjoys human company, and is such a lovely natured boy. He can be reactive to dogs while out walking, so he’ll need understanding owners willing to work with him.

✨ Benji – 18 month old Greyhound x Whippet.
An absolute sweetheart bursting with fun and personality. Benji loves both people and dogs and is always ready for an adventure. He cannot live with cats.

💙 Wilson & Harvey
Wilson, an 8 year old Cocker Spaniel, and Harvey, a 13 year old Jack Russell, are both incredibly sweet and good with other dogs. They’d love a home where someone is around a lot, and where energetic Wilson can enjoy plenty of activity!

If you think you could offer any of these amazing dogs the loving home they deserve, please visit https://www.manxspca.com/dogs/ for more info, and fill out an online “home finder questionnaire” 🐾❤️

On behalf of ManxSPCA, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Richard and Lauren Catchpole, in memory of their beloved cat, Garfield.

Following Garfield’s illness, donations were raised to support his treatment. Sadly, Garfield did not make it, and the funds were no longer required. Donors were given the choice to have their contributions returned or donated to charity, and it was overwhelmingly decided to help other animals in need.

Richard and Lauren kindly chose ManxSPCA and another local charity to receive the funds, in Garfield’s memory.

We are incredibly grateful to Richard and Lauren, and to everyone who donated — Garfield’s legacy will live on through the animals this support will help.
