A little introduction 🐾 peeps

I’m Kirstey, pet bereavement counsellor, innate animal botanical practitioner student, a teacher and canine massage therapist with a special focus on palliative care. I’m devoted to senior dogs and the humans who walk beside them, offering gentle support that honours both the physical and emotional journey. ❤️

My work also includes teaching accredited and non-accredited workshops for dog guardians and professionals, covering everything from canine first aid to holistic arthritis care (including bespoke courses).

Whether it's easing mobility, navigating heart-deep transitions, or simply building trust through touch, my approach is warm, grounded, and deeply personal❣️

I live with my partner Carl and two beloved companions a Staffie and a Jack Russell (Monty JRT - is my mum's boy - we spend time together as my parents live right next door), whose wisdom and playfulness infuse everything I do. 🐾💛

I have a passion for growing my own medicinal plants and creating hydrosols and salves. 💚

Vid 2, Hydrosols - Calendula, Mugwort, Rosemary. Pref: Mugwort & Rosemary.

Vid 3 Hydrosols - Mugwort & Rosemary. Pref: Rosemary

Vid 4 Fresh Plants - Calendula, Mugwort, Rosemary. Pref: Mugwort and Calendula

Vid 5 Fresh Plants - Smorgasbord of the above. Pref: Mugwort.

💚Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
Actions: Nervine, bitter, emmenagogue, mild analgesic, and digestive stimulant.

💚Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Actions: Circulatory stimulant, nervine, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory.

💚Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
Actions: Lymphatic, vulnerary (wound healing), anti-inflammatory, mild antifungal.

His fav was Mugwort & Calendula. He is recovering from a deep wound to his left hind limb (mild pain killers & anti-inflammatory), and he is out of sorts as his routine has changed due to the hot weather - Shilo dislikes change).

He did however drink a lot of the Rosemary Hydrosol initially - both Rosemary and Mugwort are Nervines - these were his two preferences with the Hydrosols.

Just noticed that energetically - the chosen botanicals are emotionally grounding and balancing - this would make sense with the changes in routine - he is a sensitive soul xx

I've made five hydrosols today for the boys to select -

Calendula
Mugwort
Sage
Peppermint
Rosemary

🧡 Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
🐾 Actions: Vulnerary, anti-inflammatory, lymphatic decongestant, antifungal, antimicrobial, mildly astringent
🐾Often chosen for digestive discomfort, IBD, or post-infection recovery
🧡 May be selected for emotional soothing during grief or convalescence.

💚 Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
🐾 Actions: Digestive stimulant, antispasmodic, antibacterial, immune-modulating, mild sedative
🐾 Sometimes selected for parasite cleansing or detox support
💚 May be chosen during seasonal transitions or when dogs are emotionally unsettled.

🌿 Sage (Salvia officinalis)
🐾 Actions: Antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cooling, mildly drying
🐾 Dogs may select sage for oral health, ear cleansing, or skin infections
🐾 Can be chosen for hormonal balancing or age-related cognitive support
🌿 Occasionally selected for energetic grounding or mental clarity.

💜 Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
🐾 Actions: Circulatory stimulant, antioxidant, antimicrobial, spasmolytic, mildly warming
🐾 Dogs may gravitate toward rosemary for muscle stiffness, poor circulation, or fatigue
💜 Often chosen for mental alertness or low mood.

💙 Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)
🐾 Actions: Cooling, antispasmodic, digestive aid, analgesic, energising
🐾 Often selected for pain relief, especially head tension or muscle soreness, or sickness and nausea
💙 May be chosen for emotional uplift or mental stimulation.

Ps it's best to offer individually to dogs not at the same time. As you can see from the clip - watch very carefully Monty's body language....

In the video clip is the discarded herb - I will offer the hydrosols later.

Please take heed - especially if you have a working dog.

⚠️ 🌡 "Temperature has Momentum"

If your dog is working hard, starts getting too hot and so you stop what they are doing, give them a break, put them in shade...

What happens to your dog's core body temperature, signs & symptoms?

Do they suddenly drop off right away?

Do they pause?

NO... Temperature has Momentum!

As they go up their exertion curve, even after you put them in a rest, their core body temperature will continue to rise, then plateau, then decrease!

What does that mean in the field?

You are not just evaluating your dog right here and now, you have to think ahead, even if you stop right here and now, it will get worse before it gets better!

Know that you may miss some of the early signs & symptoms, a dog in drive may cover up a lot of the early signs, so you may think he's ok, until after work he then comes out of drive, but his temperature is still going up, you may leave him thinking he looks pretty good, walk away but things may be getting worse. Keep a watch on your dog – Eyes On For Safety.

Temperature has Momentum!

Please let me know your thoughts ###

Better a Day Too Early, than a Day Too Late…. But Is It? The decision to euthanise a pet is one of the hardest choices a guardian can face. For many, this phrase offers reassurance: a way to frame the impossible choice as an act of mercy rather than tragedy. The idea is simple, choosing euthanasia...

Hi everyone, I've been quiet here recently - but beavering away behind the scenes with work and studies (Botanical Animal Practitioner Training) etc. I've won an award!!

From Rachael Maxwell - Animal Botanical

💚 Hi Kirstey 💚

A big hearty well done on winning my award for best offering with a dog for Herbal Shenanigans 2025 Spring series and for working through the spring detoxification series with grace despite all the problems with Monty and all you do at home, and actually for everyone! But also for undertaking your Practitioner work too! Seriously a big well done.

You have worked so hard to offer and support Monty and I have been super inspired by your determination with herbs, foraging, offering and working with the season.

A huge well done from me.

🐾 Remembering Our Beloved Pets 🐾

Today is World Pet Memorial Day, a time to honour and cherish the memories of the pets who brought unconditional love, joy, and companionship into our lives.

Though they may no longer be by our side, their paw prints remain forever in our hearts. Whether it was a wagging tail that greeted us after a long day, gentle purrs that soothed our worries, or the endless laughter they inspired. Our furry, feathered, and scaled friends will never be forgotten.

Share a memory or a photo of a beloved pet today and celebrate the love that never fades. 💛🐾

About Me

Ok, so a little bit about myself.

I have never known my life without animals. I have always had rescue dogs and pigeons, I have kept rabbits, budgies, fish and terrapins to name a few. When I was small I would smuggle in lost kittens without my parents knowledge. I have rescued a few pigeons with broken legs and wings along with, a seagull, baby blackbirds and sparrows, a baby magpie, hedgehogs and a fish. I have also given rescue breaths thus saving a baby pigeons (squab) life. I have a great empathy and understanding of animals.

My friends and neighbours know to come to me when they see an injured bird. I also race pigeons and have spoken to children who have been interested in the sport and have gifted them a few racing pigeons over the years. I have a Staffie named Shilo (my favourite breed of dog - if I had enough money I would set up a rescue home for this misunderstood, abused and neglected breed), and JRT named Monty. It is the JRT that wears the trousers!

I am a firm believer in force free and fear free training, anything that causes a dog or other animal fear or pain is totally unnecessary. I also support putting an end to breed specific legislation - this abhorrent law can seize an innocent family pet and put him or her to sleep through no fault of their own - based only how they look!
