Our experienced equine-only vets have been busy this summer, travelling across Cumbria to carry out many pre-purchase examinations - also known as vettings 🐴

Each vetting is tailored to the individual horse and potential buyer. Rather than giving a simple “pass” or “fail,” we carry out a thorough assessment to determine if the horse is suitable for its intended purpose. Because of this, we strongly recommend arranging your own vetting, even if the horse has previously passed one.

For all ridden horses, we advise a 5-stage vetting, which includes:

🔸 A full clinical examination at rest

🔸 Trot-up and flexion tests

🔸 Assessment on the lunge and/or under saddle

🔸 A final examination and trot-up after a period of rest

If the horse cannot be ridden, a 2-stage vetting can be done, which includes:

🔸 A clinical examination at rest

🔸 Trot-up and flexion tests (without ridden assessment)

A 5-stage vetting usually takes 90 minutes to 2 hours and includes taking a blood sample for storage.

Before the examination, we ask that:

👉 The horse is stabled

👉 There is a suitable area for trot-up

👉 An arena is available for ridden assessment

If you don't have appropriate facilities we can perform them at our Newbiggin clinic.

If you’d like advice or want to book a vetting, call our equine team on 017684 83789 📲

Uveitis & Flies in Horses 👁️🐴

Uveitis is one of the leading causes of blindness in horses - and flies play a bigger role than you might think. Flies irritate the eyes, spread infections, and can trigger painful flare-ups, especially in horses with a history of uveitis.

✅ Spot the signs early: squinting, eye discharge, swelling, or changes in eye color.
✅ Protect your horse: use fly masks, repellents (never in the eye), and good stable management.
✅ Always call your vet if you notice symptoms - prompt care is key to protecting vision.

The final Foal Friday for the year, which touches all our hearts 💙
At just 14 hours old, Harvey lost his mum after emergency colic surgery. The owners were heartbroken and unsure how to keep him safe. Bottle feeding wasn’t an option due to the risk of aspiration pneumonia in foals, so they fed him by bucket every two hours — then a miracle happened.

Daisy’s owner, Genevieve, got in touch after seeing their plea on facebook for a foster mare. She lived nearby and had previously shown strong maternal instincts after losing her only foal years ago. Genevieve knew Daisy would be up to the job after forming a wonderful bond with a recently weaned foal in a neighbouring field a couple of years ago. The moment Daisy saw Harvey, she knew. She took him in as her own and within days began producing milk naturally.

Daisy has been the perfect mum, Harvey is thriving thanks to her, and the bond they share is beautiful to witness.

Daisy truly is a pony in a million — and we will forever be thankful for the love she’s given Harvey. 🐴💛
This was sent into us by Harvey's owner - Sian & Daisy's owner - Genevieve.

Did you know that your horse isn't protected from flu until 14 days after the 2nd vaccination? And it's important to complete the full primary course to ensure adequate protection 💉

While flu is generally not a life-threatening disease, it is highly contagious. The flu vaccine massively reduces the clinical signs a horse will have if it comes into contact with the virus.

https://equinesurveillance.org/equiflunet/ can show you where outbreaks are in the UK.
