Do you know the 1-2-3-4 rule for newborn foals and the mare?

The first few hours of the foals life are a critical time period for both the mare and foal to ensure that they both stay healthy.

1. Foals should stand within 1 hour

2. Foals should suck within 2 hours

3. Mares should have cleansed their placenta by 3 hours

4. Foals should pass their meconium within 4 hours

Foals should continue to regularly suck a couple of times an hour and will spend a lot of the time in-between sleeping. If you notice that your foal is not standing without assistance or is not sucking, please call your vet asap for assistance.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to ring our one of our equine vets

Keeping your horse cool in warm weather β˜€οΈ

Summer has arrived in Cumbria so now is a great time to recap the best ways to keep your horses cool in this lovely weather:

-Ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water. Floating some apples or carrots (if appropriate for your horse) in a bucket of water can encourage water intake, as well as soaking hay and feeding wet mash feeds. Access to a salt lick allows horses to replace lost salts if they feel deficient.

-Ensure access to shade. Natural shade provided by trees or hedges works well, but consider the use of a field shelter if no natural shade is available.

-Consider ventilation in stables. A large fan, or fans, can be used to increase airflow, but make sure to plug them into a safe socket away from stables where horses can interfere with it.

-Prevent sunburn. Pink muzzles are particularly vulnerable to the sun, but the use of a child safe sunblock can help to reduce the risk.

-Where possible, plan your ride in the morning or evening, avoiding the hottest points of the day.

-If travel is necessary try to do it at the cooler parts of the day, and ensure you have plenty of ventilation in the wagon. Carry plenty of water in case of delays or breakdown.

-Fly masks can help to protect your horses eyes from the flies

As your mares foaling date approaches, it's important to know the stages of foaling:

1. Your mare will start showing some signs of discomfort including restlessness, sweating and lying down. The length of this stage can be very variable so it's important to keep a close eye on your mare from now on!

2. Active labour. This is the time from when the waters break to the foal being born. We would expect the second stage of labour to be very quick in a horse.

3. The placenta should be expelled within three hours of the birth.

What might count as an emergency?
-Red bag presentation – premature detachment of the placenta
-Dystocia - foal not delivered within 20 minutes of the waters breaking
-Foal issues; not sucking, not standing, depressed foal, breathing issues

If you are expecting a foal and want any advice ahead of time or need an emergency visit please call the practice to speak to one of our equine vets on 01768483789

There continues to be reports of equine influenza across the country including a couple more reports from Cumbria over the past few weeks. Please continue to be vigilant, monitor your horse for signs of a cough, nasal or ocular discharge or and elevated temperature and call to speak to a vet if you are concerned.

If your horse is regularly mixing with other horses away from home and it has not had a flu booster within the last 6 months, bringing this booster forward may be helpful.

HBLB International Codes of Practice | Prevention

Some venues have started to ask for a recent booster vaccination before attending so please keep an eye out for updates from the venues you attend, and also check your horse’s passport! If this applies to you, please arrange booster vaccinations in good time as 7-day clearances for competition will still apply.

If you are planning to attend a show, camp, fun ride or any outing where your horse is mixing with other horses, monitor your horse’s temperature in the few days prior to ensure your own horse isn’t taking something with them that could spread to others.

If you have any concerns or queries about your horse, please speak to one of the equine vets on 017684 83789 πŸ“žπŸ΄

Strangles Awareness Week 2026 has been amazing! Once again, there has been fantastic activity both on and offline. By posting, sharing, liking, attending events and asking questions we really are spreading the word, not the disease.
As cases of Strangles continue to affect horses and owners all over the country, giving horses the BEST protection is more important than ever. SAW26 may be drawing to a close, but the threat of infectious disease sadly isn’t. By working together, we really can turn the tide on Strangles.
Because every horse can get Strangles, and every person can make a difference
