The Practice was established in 2005 to provide horse owners with a dedicated equine veterinary service across Central Scotland, including Kinross-shire, Perthshire, Fife, Clackmannanshire and West Lothian. We provide all of our clients with a friendly and compassionate service whilst striving for the highest level of clinical care for the horses and ponies entrusted to the practice. We are proud

that as an independent and family run Equine vets in Scotland the practice has maintained a small, friendly feel where we know our customers and they know us. 🦷 Is Your Horse Hiding Dental Pain? 🐴

Horses are incredibly stoic animals — they often hide signs of discomfort, including dental pain. By the time symptoms appear, the problem could already be advanced.

That's why regular dental checks are so important. Routine examinations allow us to catch issues like sharp enamel points, loose or fractured teeth, and infections before they cause real discomfort or affect your horse’s performance and wellbeing.

➡Signs your horse might be struggling (often subtly) can (but not always) include:
🔹 Difficulty chewing or dropping feed
🔹 Head tossing or resistance under saddle
🔹 Weight loss despite a good diet
🔹 Unusual behaviour or irritability

💬 If your horse hasn’t had a dental check in the last 6–12 months, now’s the time. Prevention is always better — and kinder — than cure.

🏍We are delighted to report that Jenny and the rest of the amazing Vets with Horsepower team are now home (despite poor Jenny having her bike stolen), after another amazing and inspirational tour.

🌱 Proactive Pasture Care After the Rain 🐴

With the recent rainfall and warmer temperatures due again, grass growth will be kicked into high gear 🌧️➡️🌿 — and while that might seem like great news for sparse-looking paddocks, it can be a hidden danger for your horses and ponies.

When our horses are constantly grazing, it can be hard to see exactly how much grass is growing, but at Loch Leven Equine Practice, we're passionate about preventative care so here are some tips to help with weight management before the grass starts growing again.

💡 Our top tips:
✅Do check digital pulses daily
✅Keep up with regular weight and body condition scoring, or pop into the clinic to use our scales. It is also useful to take weekly photographs to help monitor any change in weight
✅Do restrict grazing/use a grazing muzzle
✅Do increase their exercise if possible
✅Do soak your hay for 12 hours to reduce the nutrients/goodness in it
✅Know the early warning signs of laminitis
✅Do ask for professional nutritional advice
❎Don’t try to cut their food intake by leaving them without food for long periods of time as they may colic
❎Don’t feed foods rich in carbs or rapidly fermentable fibre

Vets are so expensive…

⚖️We sit quietly about a lot of matters, but we wanted to add some balance to this debate that vets are expensive.

ℹThis is a recent invoice sent to one of our clients for a routine vaccination at her yard (for one horse)
🛻Our client lives 30 miles away from the practice – a 60 mile round trip.
📅Our vet spent 45 minutes in the car getting to the yard. To become a vet, she has undergone five years of intense training, and has a further seven years of invaluable equine veterinary experience.
🛻The car is of course insured, taxed, MOT’d, has running costs and requires fuel.
Once there, she spent 15 minutes chatting to the owner about Spud’s health, listened to her heart, checked that the horse presented was the one on the passport, and administered the vaccine.
ℹShe then filled in Spud’s passport, logging important data like the batch number, before recording them on the LLEP system.

➡Once back at the practice, our vet has paperwork to complete as they create an invoice.
➡After this is on the system, one of our client care team then checks the invoice and emails it to the client.
➡Once the payment is received, another member of our team reconciles the invoice against the payment which is inputted onto our accounting system.

ℹCost of LLEP vaccine: £49
ℹCost of 30 mile travel on a Flexi Visit Day: £21
ℹTotal cost of invoice to client: £70

➡As a comparison:

ℹCost of Flu Vaccine on the NHS: Approx £20
ℹCost of Tetanus on the NHS: £35-46
ℹCost of fuel per mile as per Government recommended guidelines : £27.
