Puppy grooming isn’t only preparation for a nice haircut later.

It’s also about teaching a young dog that being touched, having paws handled, standing on a table, hearing equipment and having someone work around their face are ordinary, manageable parts of life.

Those skills matter beyond appearance.

A puppy who learns to cope with necessary care has something useful to take into adulthood.

The aim isn’t a “perfect” puppy. It’s a dog who has been given a fair chance to learn.

One of the useful things about regular grooming is familiarity.

When you see and handle the same dog regularly, changes can sometimes stand out — a new lump, a sore patch, a change in skin or coat, or something that simply wasn’t there before.

A groomer isn’t there to diagnose what it is. That belongs with your vet.

But noticing a change and saying, “I think this is worth getting checked,” can still be valuable.

Grooming is hands-on care, and that can make it one useful part of the wider wellbeing picture.

Not every useful grooming appointment ends with a full groom.

Sometimes progress looks much quieter than that.

Jazzy’s sessions are kept short and manageable so we can keep building her confidence around grooming without turning the whole thing into too much all at once.

That might not give the most dramatic before-and-after picture, but it does matter.

For some dogs, wellbeing means making grooming feel more predictable, more manageable and less overwhelming over time.

That kind of progress counts too.

“Just nails” can sound like a tiny job.

But keeping nails at a manageable length can make a real difference to day-to-day comfort, and for some dogs the appointment itself needs just as much thought as the trim.

Short, regular visits can sometimes be easier than waiting until there is a bigger job to do.

Wellbeing isn’t always about doing more. Quite often it’s about making necessary care easier to cope with.

Grooming is about more than how a dog looks when they leave the salon.

A comfortable coat, manageable nails, clean areas around the eyes and feet, and being able to cope with regular handling can all play a part in everyday wellbeing.

And because grooming is hands-on, regular appointments can sometimes mean noticing that something feels or looks different from last time.

That doesn’t make a groomer a vet, and it isn’t our job to diagnose. But grooming can still be one useful part of the bigger picture of caring for your dog.

That’s the thread I’m looking at through October: wellbeing, not just appearance.

A successful groom isn’t always a complete groom.

The starting point for each appointment matters: how the dog arrives, what they can manage that day and what we learn as we go.

Sometimes success is getting one difficult area done without pushing further.

Sometimes it is a dog staying settled for something they previously struggled with.

Sometimes it is recognising that today is not the day to insist on the last ten per cent.

Stopping is not automatically giving up. In the right circumstances, it is part of the plan.

For dogs who find grooming difficult, progress is much easier to build when every appointment isn’t treated as an all-or-nothing test.

A sensible finish today can be the foundation for a better start next time.

“The best groom we’ve ever had.”

That was the feedback from Mavis’s owner after her handstrip.

Lovely feedback is always nice to receive, but the reason reviews matter so much isn’t really about collecting compliments.

When someone is looking for a groomer — especially for a puppy, a nervous dog or a dog who needs a more individual approach — they’re often trying to work out what the experience is actually going to be like.

Hearing from other owners helps give them a clearer picture.

For Mavis, the important part of the story is still the same: she was introduced to handstripping later, so we started from where she was, worked with the dog and coat in front of us and built a sensible foundation rather than rushing the process.

That’s the bit I’m proud of.

The right start doesn’t only happen in the salon.

Before a puppy ever needs a proper haircut, they can begin learning that paws being touched, ears being checked, a brush moving through their coat and someone calmly handling their face are normal parts of life.

That idea sits at the heart of The Grooming Gap: things that are completely ordinary to us can be completely new to a puppy.

You don’t need to turn home into a mini grooming salon.

A few calm seconds, repeated regularly and stopped before it becomes a battle, can give your puppy useful experiences for the groomer to build on later.

Early preparation isn’t about creating a “perfect” puppy.

It is about making the first real grooming experiences less confusing.

Puppy grooming isn’t a race to the first full haircut.

For puppies who will need regular salon grooming, the early visits are where we start building the skills that make all the later grooms possible.

The table, the dryer, water, clippers, having paws handled and someone working around the face can all be completely new experiences.

Puppy Foundations uses short, progressive sessions so those things can be introduced without expecting a very young dog to cope with an entire adult groom straight away.

Starting early doesn’t mean doing more.

It means giving the puppy time to learn before we ask for more.

The haircut will come. The foundation comes first.

The right start depends on where we’re starting.

For new dogs and puppies coming to me for salon grooming, that starting route is a Stress Free Start. It gives us a chance to meet in the salon before jumping straight into a full groom.

For dogs I groom in their own homes, the starting point is different.

Before I begin, I need to assess the dog, the space available, access to the home and the practical set-up we have to work with. That helps me decide how to make the appointment work well for that individual dog.

And home isn’t automatically the less stressful option.

Some dogs benefit from being in familiar surroundings. For others, a calm one-to-one salon gives clearer boundaries and fewer distractions. Neither setting is “better” for every dog.

The important bit is choosing the right place to start, then adapting the approach around the dog in front of me.
