A trainer’s work is never over… even on holiday, Katharine was still training! Read on for her latest adventure, this time, all the way from Crete!
I’m currently staying with my sister, Charlotte, who lives on a beautiful bit of land in Crete. Over the years she’s rescued and rehomed many abandoned dogs and cats - but a few have stolen her heart and stayed. One of those is Vito.
Vito is a Greek Shepherd dog, and true to his breed, he’s been very hard to train. These dogs are bred to be independent, their only job is to guard livestock. They roam without structure, without a master, and without the expectation of following commands. So, convincing them to work with you takes patience and creativity.
Luckily, Charlotte has fenced land and a few goats for Vito to look after. He’s free to roam, but she can’t walk him, he guards her against everything: people, cars, and especially other dogs. He’s even got himself into trouble a few times because of it.
During the day, the heat brings the dogs inside, but in the afternoon they need to go back out to guard the property, especially the goats, which are a valuable (and sometimes stolen) commodity. The trouble is, Vito doesn’t always want to go. He’s been known to growl if you try to take him by the collar, and it’s always wise to listen to a growl rather than ignore it and risk escalation.
So, I’ve been working with him using the “find it” game, hiding pieces of meatball for him to sniff out and find. He’s loved it! It taps into his natural instincts and gives him a job he enjoys. Now, when we leave the house, I lay a trail of treats to guide him outside, and it works beautifully.
Every morning at 6am, Vito comes inside and lies outside my door, waiting for me and his game. It’s heartwarming and shows that even the most independent dogs can learn something new.
I truly believe all dogs are capable of learning. It’s just about figuring out what makes them tick. For Vito, it’s using his instincts in a way that feels like play, not obedience. He might never follow traditional commands, but he’s learning, engaging, and building a stronger bond with his people. 🐾❤️
