She can't be going to mention it, can she? It's August. Surely she isn't. Is she? She is.

Christmas 🫣

We're 17 weeks out, which means most CurlyClips dogs only have 2 or 3 grooms left this year. So when we're making appointments over the coming weeks, we'll also book the following one.

I'm taking 2 weeks holiday this year (I know right, absolute liberties). My last working day will be Thursday 18th Dec and I'll be back Tuesday 6th Jan. If you have a particular need for your doggo to be booked in close to Christmas please get in touch asap so I can fit you into the last week - otherwise we'll just let appointments fall in their normal schedule.

OK, now that's over with, let's finish our summer shall we? 🌞🐩❤️

Who am I? 🤔🤷‍♀️

More than once I have arrived at someone's house for grooming to find that they don't actually know my name 😅 I always make sure to include it in my first message to someone when they enquire, but after that its quite tricky to drop it into conversation 😂 Probably time for a little re-introduction.

I'm Susie - I've worked with dogs in various capacities ever since my days as an agency dog walker while at university. In 2017 I took an intensive course to gain my City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in dog grooming, and CurlyClips was born!

I live in Bridgend with my husband, nearly-3 year old son and our (current count) 9 dogs. You can see a little more of what we get up to at home on our Instagram https://www.instagram.com/beechtreepets/

Maybe I should buy a name tag...

⭐️GUESS THE BREEDS⭐️ that have gone into making these two huge and rather handsome brothers! 😍

Some clues: there are 2 breeds in the cross, one breed gives them their size - I've met a handful of these during my years working with dogs. The second is a breed I've literally never met! Contrary to looks, neither breed is a grizzly bear.

Murphy and Hagrid may not quite be my usual clientelle, being too big for either of my tables and needing a full deshed rather than a clip; but they are super special boys who need extra love & care, plus they're a little bit curly so we'll give them a pass 😅 Once I was sure their owners were ready for the aftermath of a large breed deshed in their house, we were good to go.

And for the first time I took Mr CurlyClips along as an extra pair of hands (and moral support for the cwtchy big boys). Even though they were super well behaved, M&H did take a bit of manoeuvring around, and there was just a lot of dog to cover! But with 2 blasters, 2 brushes & 2 sets of arms, we were able to get them finished much quicker than I would have managed on their own, so they could go and catch up on their naps for the day.

We may be pulling hair out of our noses and eyes for the next week, but it was worth it to see the lads looking fresh and comfortable. I don't have any prizes for the person who guesses both their breeds, but I'll be mighty impressed! 🐻🐩❤️

I am just LOVING my Learn To Groom Your Curly Dog tuition. 3 months in and every team has been wonderful – the humans have been super receptive, picked up the skills quickly and the dogs have been excellent models (even those who are not grooming fans!)

I’ve always been a believer in home grooming. It’s something that often receives sniggers and sneers within professional grooming circles, but whether its for convenience, budget, behaviour or just for fun, I think for some dogs and owners it's a fantastic option. I groomed all my own dogs before I did my training to learn how to groom other people’s, and I know plenty of other dedicated owners who continue to manage solo.

Having said that, grooming utilises sharp and dangerous tools on a living, moving sculpture. At a very basic level we need to be hugely mindful of safety, before we start also thinking about the dog’s emotional wellbeing or any aesthetics. It requires a combination of different skills which take commitment to learn and practice to perfect.

And this is where I felt the world was a little lacking. Dog owners don’t want to have to learn all about how to groom every breed of dog, just to be able to manage their own at home – so a traditional grooming course is unnecessarily broad & expensive. YouTube videos can be a good start, but in my opinion there’s nothing like responsive, real-time, hands-on training, particularly when there are so many variables and a real life animal to work around. And all the ‘learn to groom your dog’ offerings I could find were based in a salon with completely different equipment than you might use at home, with an entire groom packed into one day. Having now run a few tuition courses, I feel even more strongly that this sort of learning needs to be broken down into chunks, not only to make it tolerable for the dog, but also to have any chance of the human owner processing and retaining the huge amount of information included.

I’m so pleased with how every session has gone so far, and am excited to book more. If you’re interested in learning to groom your dog at home, drop me a message for more info! 👩‍🏫🐩❤️

I’m not a great groomer, technically. Don’t get me wrong, I’m fine, some days I’m good, but I’m not desperately passionate about the craft of grooming and certainly won’t be winning any competitions. I’m much more of a ‘that'll-do’ groomer than a ‘no hair out of place’ groomer.

So if my customers aren’t getting champ-quality grooms from me, what are they getting instead?

1. Kindness and patience
Some dogs naturally stand like statues throughout their groom and that’s great, but many more don't and that’s fine too. Sometimes the kindest thing to do is quietly power through and get it over with, but sometimes things just take a bit more time. And getting grumpy or rough with a dog certainly isn’t going to get the job done any faster or make anyone's lives happier.

2. A chat
I know its not always easy to find someone to talk ‘dogs’ with. Not everyone gets it. But from training challenges & doggy interactions, to vet visits and even horrible stuff like quality of life decisions and pet grief, if its on your mind and you want to talk about it, I’m in. And it doesn't just stop at dogs - families, homes, jobs, hobbies - I'm here for that too.

3. No judgement
Messy home? Shouty dogs? Knots & tangles? Need to rearrange an appointment? No big deal. Life is chaotic and messy and the last thing anyone needs is their dog groomer giving them grief about it. I will absolutely be honest about your dog’s coat condition & behaviour, and about the grooming options we have as a result, but I’m not in the business of lectures.

I’m not the best groomer out there and sometimes there will be hairs out of place, but hopefully the other stuff makes up for it 🤷‍♀️🐩❤️

Home from a lovely beachy holiday 🌞 with two pieces of non-grooming related news:

1. I have brought back a delightful summer bug so please excuse the snuffling and raspy voice. I'll be chugging the cold drinks and probably chain-sucking strepsils

2. I have a bit of a sweetpea surplus! Normally I wouldn't think there is such a thing as too many flowers, but if I don't keep cutting these they won't keep growing, and I've only got so many vases 😅

So I have bunches for sale, £3 for a small, £5 for a large. Pick your own colours or have a mix of all. I took a bunch on holiday for my mum and although they drooped a little in the car, they soon perked up with some fresh water and lasted the rest of the week, so I think they'll cope out on my grooming travels. Just drop me a message if you'd like some 🌸🏵🌼

So many lovely familiar faces this week, many of whom I've known since the very earliest days of CurlyClips. Some I've known since they were just puppies, in fact there are three here I've known since the moment they were born 🥰

Plus one beautiful new face! Our wonderful pal Lucie bichon has a new little sister - Lottie cockapoo. And what a darling she was for her first little grooming practice.

A wonderful way to round off work before a little holiday - back soon! 🏖🐩❤️

When I first started the CurlyClips page, I made a decision that I was only going to post when I had something I wanted to say. Partly because endless un-captioned photos of freshly groomed dogs isn’t the sort of content I find interesting; and partly because I spent 3 years of writing & creating to get a first class arts degree (Drama, to be specific), and I am determined to have something to show for it, besides a hefty student loan debt that I'll never pay off and some letters after my name that I never use.

Of course these days lots of people use AI to generate their social media content, and I get it – people just want to do their jobs and go home, they don’t want to then spend hours thinking up pithy commentary on their job in the name of marketing. Seems like exactly the sort of task to outsource to the robots.

I thought I’d give it a go this week and see if AI has the potential to make my degree even more superfluous than it already is. So I gave it this week’s collage and asked for a social media post about it. Here’s what it wrote:

“✨ Just look at these fresh-faced fluffballs! 🐶✂️ This week’s grooms were full of character, cuddles, and some seriously cute transformations. Whether it was a full tidy-up or a stylish summer trim, each of these lovely dogs got the pampering they deserved. Huge thanks to all my wonderful clients for another tail-wagging week! 🐾💈 ”

What do we reckon? I’ll be honest, the tone is quite familiar 😅 and with only a couple of tweaks could probably pass for something I wrote. But im not sure I’m ready to let computers take over any part of my job just yet - captions here will remain 100% human-generated for the forseeable future. Susie CurlyClips BA(hons) 😜🐩❤️

Holy guacamole 🥑 Three new curly pals in one week?! Time for some introductions.

First up we have the totally beautiful Welsh Terrier - Margo. Now if I've done my job properly, I actually won't see Margo many more times, because her family are taking my Learn To Groom Your Curly Dog course! This week her mum & dad absolutely smashed the prep-work, and then I just finished off the groom afterwards. They were all utter superstars and I'm so looking forward to our cutting & styling session in a couple of months.

And then we have two sweetheart Cockapoos Jess and Darcy who have found the salon environment stressful lately, but we're both just wonderful for their in-home grooms.

How lucky am I to have such dreamy clients 🥰🐩❤️

My little MiniClips (now a fully-fledged toddler) has been trying some sessions at nursery recently, with mixed success 😅 And it’s got me thinking about why its difficult to handover your much-loved doggo to a groomer/kennel/sitter and then leave them. It’s the not knowing, right? Not knowing how what’s happened or how they’ve felt or what memories they’ve made that day – its tough!

How they act at drop-off and pickup is not necessarily a reflection of how they’ve felt for the duration of their stay, and there’s only so much info you can get from them or even from a comprehensive handover.

And it’s made me extra grateful and extra proud to be an in-home groomer, because being able to stay with a dog throughout their groom is a perk pretty unique this particular service. My customers know exactly how their dog has coped through put their groom because they’re right there in the next room – some may even stay to watch.

Grooms are not always stress-free, sometimes there are negative feelings and difficult behaviours, but at least there is no mystery. That has to be easier for everyone, I think. 🤔🐩❤️

A+++ to team Pudding who completed the first session of their Learn To Groom Your Curly Dog course this week 🤩

In this Perfect Prep session we covered:
🛁 Thorough bathing
🌪 Blow drying technique for that fluffy finish
💅 Nail clipping
🐾 Paw pad trimming
🚽 Hygiene areas

Pudding is a sensitive soul who struggles with some aspects of grooming, but is much happier when her mama handles her (or provides plenty of treaties!). Through this 1:1 tuition we were able to work around Pudding's individual difficulties find adaptations to suit her needs.

Over the coming weeks, Pudding's mama will be able to practice her new skills and use them to inform Pud's ongoing training. I can't wait to go back in a couple of months for session 2 - Clipping and Styling 😀🐩❤️

Early warning that I'm taking a little bit of time off in July 🏖 I'll be working extra days the week before and the week after, but some grooms may still need to be a little off-schedule.

If anyone has particular dates in late June or July that you really need to fit around holidays etc, please drop me a message and I'll get you booked in early so you don't miss out 🌞🐩❤️
