Just a little appreciation post for my right hand girl Dutch, aka The Dutchess 👑

Those of you that have come for dog reactivity would likely have met her.

She is an amazing ambassador for her breed and is just in general an all round super little girly 🧡

We always see posts asking for pics, but this time, I want pics and some words on why your dog is such a legend. In my job, I often hear most about what dogs don't/can't do, I mean that's my job 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 But, let's hear the other side, those super cuddlers, great alarm dogs, window lickers....I mean cleaners 😉, the ones that make you laugh.

Let's start off the week with some positive vibes.

Dutch just has to look at me to make me smile and she is honestly the friendliest dog, so, here's to you kid 😘

A couple of months ago, we met the handsome Basil for a behaviour consultation.

His owner wanted some help with Basil's excitement levels when around people and other dogs.

If I have Labradors for reactivity, more often than not, it is excitement based. These dogs are bred to be super social.

Whether or not people like to admit it, a lot of owners are way more likely to approach, and let their own dog approach and play with certain breeds over others. This can actually make it harder for people to socialise their dogs properly.

There are those with more "undesirable" breeds, who don't get as many opportunities. And then in Basil's case, those with popular, well known breeds, who can't keep people and their dogs away.
So, finding a balance can be difficult.

We had a stooge dog out, and after some engagement and proper exposure, Basil and his owner did brilliant. His communication skills were also checked and all good.

Moving forward, it will all be about creating balance in exposure. Finding that middle ground and building more neutrality to people and dogs. Lots of work but such a good start made already.

Great work team Basil 🐾

Massive shout out to our Obedience Club Members Dave and Lily 📢

They have worked so hard on their sit stays. Just last year, Dave couldn't walk more than 15 feet away from Lily when she was in a stay.
Well look at them now 👀

A HUGE distance, and Lily was steady as a rock. This is also with 4 other dogs training around them.

Such a big achievement for them both 🎉

Here we go again 🙄 ☀️

Sadly, I heard that last week, a poor dog died locally after being left in a car on a warm day.

Ignorance really isn't an excuse. If you have ever gotten into a car on a warm day, you'd have felt the heat. It's just ridiculous to claim ignorance of how heat effects dogs. If you're hot, so are they 🤷🏼‍♀️

You can change your clothes to suit the weather, they can't take any layers off.

You can sweat to regulate your temperature, they can't.

You can move freely, into the shade, get a drink when you want, they can't.

Don't be fooled that because they continue to walk, or chase a ball, that they're coping. A dog will literally run itself to heat exhaustion. Play fetch till they collapse.
They WILL run themselves to death.

If you have to go out, for instance those that don't have gardens for toilet trips or you have a vet/grooming appointment to get to, lots to drink, cool coats, shade, douse with water etc. before, during, and after.

But please, when it is a hot day, walk them early morning, or late in the evening, and for the rest of the day, just leave them safe at home 👍

A few weeks ago we met Peggy, Bear, & Frankie the Frenchie for a behaviour consultation.

Their owners wanted a bit of help managing some conflicts that kept popping up between the dogs. It's quite common for their to be some disagreements in multidog homes, no different to a family home. Some get on better than others, some get on perfectly, some rub each other up the wrong way.

We asked a lot of questions, met each dog, and observed their interactions with each other and the family.

It didn't take long to establish that Bear seemed to be at the centre of most of the bust ups. He's young and a bit of a dick sw***er. Peggy and Frankie on the other hand, will try and "talk it out" so to speak.

We went over what to look out for, made much easier with how knowledgable the dogs owners are already, and also how to apply some boundaries to Bear to keep him in line and prevent situations escalating.

Everyone involved did great in the session and I have no doubt, will continue to do so.

Brilliant work team Frankie, Peggy, & Bear 🐾

A little while ago we met the handsome Woody for a puppy training session.

Being a Lurcher, of course, recall was on the cards. Along side that, we introduced some impulse control too in the form of a "Leave It" command. Impulse control training is top of my list with my own dogs, there's so many situations that it can be used in.

Woody smashed it in his session and will hopefully continue to do so at home.

Great work team Woody 🐾

This beautiful little girl is Wanda. We first met her and her owner late last year to help with some reactivity.

Wanda's owner got our behaviour training pass, which is 4 hours of training, which we then split into small sessions, used as and when you need it. Ideal for reactivity training. Every few weeks, we get to work with an exposure session.

The change in Wanda has been brilliant to see. Her owner has put the work in, pushed her own limits, and jumped at the chance to train around friends and their dogs.

I'm so bloody proud of them both. Great work team Wanda 🐾

Muzzles 🙊🐩🐾

So, I've had a few clients lately that have to, for various reasons, muzzle their dogs. And I'm so pleased to see more people being happy to do this.

Trained and used correctly, muzzles are a great tool. They provide safety for all involved.

Whether it be for the owners safety, because their dog redirects during a reaction.

Other dogs' safety, because their dog is dog aggressive.

Human safety, because their dog is human aggressive or touch sensitive.

Or their own dogs safety because they eat dangerous/inedible things when on a walk.

Please don't ever be embarrassed or ashamed to muzzle your dog, it shows, the right people anyway, that you are responsible and care about your dogs safety.

But, please make sure you are using the right muzzle. Fabric sleeve muzzles should only be used for very short periods, literally minutes, for vet/grooming appointments.

For walks, or anything over 5 minutes, dog should wear a basket type muzzle that allows them to fully open their mouth. They should be able to easily pant, eat, and drink through a properly fitted muzzle. Pictures below to help.

With the warmer weather here, it is vital that your dog can pant to regulate their temperature and cool themselves down. If they can't, they can become seriously unwell with heatstroke.

A properly fitted muzzle is an investment in your dogs health and wellbeing. Pay the extra, and get a decent muzzle. And by that, I do mean that 99% of the muzzles in most pet shops, are not fit for everyday use 🙈
They are often sold in estimated sizes based on breed. I have two Rottweiler's, one muzzle doesn't fit them both 🤷🏼‍♀️ They are completely different sizes. So in this case, one size does not fit all and breed spacific sizes aren't always accurate. Always look at measurements and if they're not spot on, go for a custom made muzzle.

But again, well done to those for taking the extra step for their dogs safety, you're doing the right thing by all 👏
