Tis the season to be hooping 🤣 sun is out and so is Archie's enthusiasm to do hoopers with Shadow! My marker is all over the place, my delivery is slow but we had fun 🤣 Archie enjoyed getting the hoops out himself 🥰 I'll make a dog trainer out of him yet 🤣

Words can't describe how much this wonderful lady will be missed! Her passion and understanding of animals was inspirational! My heart goes out to her friends and family at this difficult time. You taught so many of us so much Sarah, thank you. RIP Sarah Fisher 💔

Co-operative Grooming Care

A big shout out to Fluff & Style for making Shadow feel so relaxed! ❤️

👉 Due to her health issue and meltdown earlier in the year we had to look at an alternative grooming option as advised by the vet and the physio. I could have rectified this over time with behaviour modification, but I've also had to think practically especially as my family circumstances are changing.

🤦I was gutted this was the case as I know our previous groomer very well! She did nothing wrong, but was just in the wrong place at the wrong time when Shadow made associations to her parlour, being left and being unwell.

🐕 I'm going down a completely holistic approach to Shadows' grooming (cooperative care) so she will be happy to get into the bath herself and to stand on the table without being restrained whatsoever.

🤱 As she gets older her tolerance to being groomed will be reduced. One of my top priorities (especially over the upcoming months) is to reduce her stress as much as possible, especially as she will be adjusting to Baby Calder number 2 arriving in the new year! 🥰

🍼 Just because she coped with Archie's arrival 2.5yrs ago, does not mean she will again and it's so important for me not to be complacent...

☝️While Shadow has a fantastic temperament and has bonded well with Archie, I NEVER leave them alone together, and they are actively supervised. Even the most gentle kind natures dogs can snap and it's NEVER worth the risk!

💪 Despite not having the easiest pregnancy this time, I've been refreshing her baby training in preparation since I discovered I was pregnant.

🌠 This will be a journey, but one worth taking the time over. Shadow was so relaxed that she fell asleep on Kate's shoes! 🥰 She made some lovely choices and after just x2 sessions she was happy to climb into the van, onto the table and to put her feet in the bath. I'm feeling super positive that all is heading in the right direction!

Thank God Fireworks have finished...for now! A few top tips to help you and your dog in firework season 🎇

Top tips
1. Avoid walking your dog in the dark so you're not caught off guard. I had a note of all the local displays but there were still random ones set off I didn't anticipate.

2. Create walls of sound so the sound of the fireworks aren't so loud. We had the TV and radio on in the kitchen and the radio on in the sitting room.

3. Have enrichment as part of your dogs' normal routine so it's not just used to engage them while fireworks are on. If you only do enrichment when fireworks are on, your dog will associate the activity with fireworks and loud noises.

4. Make sure you're at home to provide comfort and reassurance to your dog.

5. Create safe spaces for dogs to hide under and away.

6. If your dog is really struggling, drooling, shaking and is still clearly upset hours afterwards, seek veterinary and help from a trained professional.

🐶 Shadows' tolerance of fireworks has definitely lowered as she's got older. We've had her fully assessed by the fantastic team at the Renew centre in Gloucestershire so we can rule out health issues for her response to fireworks. (She displays no other type of sound sensitivity).

(Obviously if Shadow needed more preparation, support and or medication I would have prepped accordingly months in advance!)

🎇 The worst for us is the local display so we watched them from the window with Archie as he couldn't sleep because they were that loud!

🧐 It was a last minute brainwave to let Shadow stay somewhere quiet for a few days which I appreciate not everyone has the luxury to do. If this is an option for you, make sure it's a normal thing and that your dog is happy staying with your friend or relative and the benefits of being away for a couple of days outweigh the stress of coping with them at home. In Shadows' case she never wants to come home when she's been at the in-laws 😂

SUPER PROUD TRAINER 🥰

One of the most rewarding things about my job is when I see what a difference I've made to a family.

As well as specialising with kids around dogs and behaviour problems I've also been training assistance dogs under the charity Pawsable. To do this my skill set and training had to be assessed, so I was super pleased that I'd be able to learn some new skills and broaden the services I could offer. (Plus the work overlaps nicely with kids around dogs).

Fudge is doing amazing with his training! It's been life changing for the family as it's meant that they have been able to go for days out. Before Fudge's training, this was not an option. He gives his young adult the confidence that she can navigate the outside world with him by her side.

You can imagine how delighted I was when the family sent me video's and photos of their daughter handling Fudge. A big shout out to Fudge and his owners for putting in all the hard work to make this possible!

Proof practice makes perfect!! I can teach, advise, and support....but I can't wave a magic wand. The work has to be put in by the owners.

(And trust me I can quickly tell if this is the case or not!)

Keep up the amazing work team Fudge!!

Go Find It with your dog and toddler

- All you need is your dog, your child, some dead wood and some yummy treats!

1. Get your child to hide the treats in the dead wood.
2. Say 'Go find it!' with your child and point your dog in the right direction.
3. When your dog has found all their treats say 'all done' and help direct them away.

Remember to 'actively' supervise your child at all times to keep both kids and dogs safe ❤️

MULTI DOG HOUSEHOLD ASSESSMENT

I had the pleasure of assessing this gorgeous pair as their owner had contacted me about a couple of behavioural issues that they were struggling with.

1. I work closely with veterinarians so we can rule out any pain or health issues that could be impacting and affecting their behaviour.

2. I will also be helping them and their owners prepare for their new baby, due in December. Luckily for them I'm a Kids Around Dogs Approved Professional so I will be able to coach them through both aspects.

3. All my methods are science based and kind going at both the dogs and owners pace. I really enjoy getting to know my clients and supporting them through their behaviour modification journey as it's no easy ride!

4. I give my clients a lot to work on, but not too much so it becomes overwhelming. They started to put things into practice straight away and after a few days I got a message saying that certain behaviours had already reduced.

I'm really looking forward to continuing to work with this gorgeous pair and their owners. Keep up the great work!
