🎉 Meet the Partners: Aidín 🐾

From the moment I first read James Herriot, I knew I wanted to be a vet. I was that child who tried to adopt every lamb, kitten, and puppy within a five-mile radius - sorry, neighbours! 😅

I graduated from Dublin in 2010 and have been working as a vet in the UK ever since. After a few moves, I found my home in the Midlands, where I’ve happily settled for the past 10 years. In 2021, I became a partner at the practice—an honour I’m incredibly proud of.

Clinical work is my happy place, especially soft tissue surgery and chatting with clients. There’s something deeply rewarding about helping pets and their people through tough times and seeing them thrive again. I’m lucky to work alongside a brilliant team who put patient welfare and client care at the heart of everything we do 💙

Outside of work, life is delightfully chaotic thanks to my rehomed cat and dog (both courtesy of the practice!) and my two young boys—though I genuinely couldn’t tell you which pair causes more mischief! 🐶👦👦🐱

Music is a big part of our household - there’s often singing and dancing in the kitchen, especially when baking is involved. I’ve recently gone gluten-free, which has added a fun twist to my baking adventures 🍰🎶

Today was a classic vet day: helped a seizuring dog, removed a sizeable lump from a cat’s thigh, discussed exciting tech upgrades for the practice, shared laughs with my colleagues, and consumed far too many chocolates 🍫

This weekend? Family time, a must-call to my loved ones in Ireland 🇮🇪

Thanks for reading - looking forward to sharing more of our journey with you!

🐭 Meet Peanut, Pistachio, Hazel and Cashew the rats! 🐭
These curious little geniuses are always on the move—exploring, climbing, and settling in for cuddles 💕 With their big personalities and love of company, life is never boring with rats around!

✨ Rat facts:
Rats are highly intelligent, affectionate rodents who thrive in pairs or groups. Females are usually busy explorers, while males are often more laid-back snuggle bugs 💫

🏡 Peanut, Pistachio, Hazel and Cashew’s top tips for a happy rat life:

🏰 A spacious cage (min. 100cm x 60cm x 60cm) with multiple levels—wire or metal only (plastic & wood won’t last with these avid chewers!)
🛖 Hides & huts for cosy naps
🛏️ Paper-based bedding (Softacard, Finacard, Bedmax, or even plain toilet roll)
🎡 A solid-surface exercise wheel (minimum 16 inches)
🧗 Hammocks, ropes & climbing toys to prevent boredom
🥗 A balanced diet of complete rat food plus fruit, veg & occasional cooked meats
💧 Unlimited fresh water in a bottle with a metal spout
🧹 Litter trays for easy cleaning & a fresher cage

💡 Fun fact: Rats brux (grind their teeth) and boggle (their eyes move in and out) when they’re super happy—it looks funny but means pure joy!
⚠️ Rats are nocturnal, so expect them to be most active in the evenings. Always supervise free-roam time to keep them safe from hazards like cables.
❤️ Rats rarely bite, love taking treats from your hand, and are fantastic with children. Morning or after-school play sessions are a big hit!

🐾 Meet Desmel the Mongolian Gerbil! 🐾
This sweet little explorer was found as a stray and brought to Broad Lane. Lucky for her, one of our amazing head nurses, Heather, gave her a forever home 💕 Now Desmel spends her days perched on arms and stealing hearts!

✨ Gerbil facts:
Gerbils are desert-adapted burrowers with tails up to 12cm long! They’re super sociable, so always best kept in pairs or groups 🐭🐭

🏡 Desmel’s top tips for happy gerbil life:
🛖 A spacious tank with at least 20cm of substrate for digging fun
🏃‍♀️ A 21cm+ wheel for zoomies
🛁 A sand bath to keep her coat silky smooth
🪵 Chew toys galore—wood, cardboard, grassy bits (Amazon boxes are a fave!)
🌾 Scatter food & forage to mimic wild foraging
🥕 Small amounts of fresh fruit & veg (not all are safe!)
🍬 Treats like mealworms, millet, pumpkin seeds, dried apple & carrot

⚠️ Handle with care—never lift a gerbil by the tail! It can cause serious injury (called de-gloving).

Swipe to see Desmel in action and her setup! 💫

Meet Darcy! 🐹

Darcy is a sweet Syrian hamster who loves to explore her spacious, enriched enclosure—perfect for hiding, tunneling, nesting, and play!

Thinking of upgrading your hamsters setup? Here’s what Darcy recommends.

✅ Minimum cage size: 100x50cm with solid, escape-proof walls (wood, glass, or plastic). Avoid wire cages—they can cause injury.
🌡️ Temperature matters: Keep the room consistent. If hamsters get too cold, they may enter torpor, a state that mimics death!
🎡 Enrichment essentials: Deep substrate, hides, sand baths, and a solid-surface wheel (28cm for Syrians, 21cm for dwarfs).
🛁 Sand baths: Vital for coat care—keep them in the cage 24/7 and clean daily.

💚 Questions? Chat with our Small Furries team at the practice!

📸 Show us your hamster’s dream home in the comments or drop a 🐹 if you think Darcy is living her best life!

💚🐾 ⭐MEET THE PARTNERS - ELLY⭐️🐾💚

💚 I decided I wanted to be a vet from the age of 8yrs (wanting to be a ballerina before that!) and I couldn’t imagine having done anything else.

💚 Broad Lane Vets was my 2nd vet job, having worked in a charity clinic immediately after graduation, which provided a great grounding in surgery and emergency care.

💚 I’ve been at the practice nearly 25 years, 18 of these as a Partner, which makes me feel incredibly old, but it’s just flown by.

💚 Music’s always been important to me and I’m re-living my Britpop youth this year, seeing several bands live, and am even considering taking up the clarinet and sax again (though I was pretty bad at them when I played in a band as a teenager!)

💚 Dog Agility is a new hobby, which keeps me active and which my young dog really enjoys - though you’re unlikely to see us competing at Crufts, as he doesn’t always do the course in the order he’s meant to!

💚 This week at work I got through some paperwork, saw some lovely pets and owners in my appointments, and did a very sad but peaceful “final goodbye” home visit (which never get any easier but are an important part of what we do). In the evening, I took Taggle, over to our Balsall Common site, where he was one of 20 dogs to give blood for the charity Pet Blood Bank UK - we close this site for the afternoon once every 8weeks to host these sessions, helping ensure blood is always available to vets across the UK, should a pet they are treating need a transfusion. We’ve been supporting them since the charity was founded back in 2007.

💚 This weekend I will be doing Park Run and then taking the young boy for a long walk to try to wear him out, which is my usual Saturday routine when not working. Then we’ll be heading down to Devon for a few days away with crazy Taggle and our old boy Stumpy, staying in a bungalow with level garden access that he can manage, and in a village with several dog-friendly pubs, of course!

💚 Why Being Independent Matters - The Broad Lane Vets Story 💚

At Broad Lane Vets, independence isn’t just a label - it’s the heart of who we are.

Founded in 1969 by Roy Hands, and later joined by his son Roger (a familiar face to many of you!), our practice has always been locally owned and deeply rooted in the community. In 2008, Elly took the reins solo, and in 2021, Ali and Aidín joined her to continue building on our legacy of compassionate care.

So what does being independent mean for you and your pets?

🐾 Our partners are hands-on, working vets - right there in the consult rooms, not just behind the scenes.
🐾 Decisions are made by people who know your pets, your concerns, and your community.
🐾 We’re not driven by corporate targets - we’re driven by love for animals and loyalty to our clients.
🐾 Every member of our team is valued, and every pet is treated like family.

Being independent means we get to choose to put care first. And that’s exactly what we do - every single day. 💚
