DOMFS Month- Computed Tomography CT

The use of computed tomography is extremely important in our discipline. We use the CT scanner in patients with head trauma, tumours of the oral cavity, pain opening the mouth, etc…

The CT scan images are very helpful to plan surgical procedures, in some instances we create 3D printed models to guide us in theatre and to prebend the plates to be used in a fracture repair.

Without the access to CT scan we will be missing significant pathology that otherwise will have gone unnoticed due to the limitations of normal skull radiograph

DOMFS Month- The importance of Dental Radiography

Albus is a young Bichon Friché dog referred for a six-month-old non-healing wound below his left eye, despite several antibiotic courses. His eyes were evaluated by the ophthalmology team before being internally referred to the dentistry team for evaluation of his teeth.

On the oral examination, the teeth were unremarkable apart from some plaque and calculus formation.

Intra-oral radiographs of the left upper teeth quadrant were performed to rule out any dental pathology before considering advanced imaging (CT scan). The radiographs showed three large abscess associated to his left upper carnassial tooth. This tooth was extracted and the problem was resolved.

We are now advertising for four rotating interns to join our current rotating intern group of four at Bristol Vet Specialists, starting on 5th January 2026.
We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals, with at least 12 months of experience working in general practice in the UK, committed to practising the highest standards of veterinary medicine and patient care that would relish the opportunity to further their career, improve their knowledge base and technical skills.

This will be a 12-month position at our hospital, where you will spend time rotating through our specialist led services, learning on the job and having fun whilst doing it! These positions can be your first rung on the ladder to obtaining a residency, but they are also a great experience as a building platform for veterinary surgeons who see their future in general practice, research or pharmaceuticals.

The internship programme

The rotating internship at BVS is a fixed one-year position. You will spend the majority of your year rotating through our departments on day shifts, under the guidance and supervision of our specialists, where you will be actively involved in cases and be an integral part of the team. There will be 1-in-8 night shifts (with recovery time after these) and 1-in-8 weekend shifts during the internship but during these, you will have the support of our wonderful patient care assistants, nurses, specialists in training and specialists, so you'll never be without support! During your year with us, you will have access to:

In addition to a £32,000 per annum salary, you will have 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, £1,000 CPD allowance over a period of 5-days, RCVS and VDS membership.

The closing date for applications is Monday 4th August and interviews are expected to take place on Tuesday 12th August. For informal enquiries, please email: [email protected] for the attention of George Nye and Emma Roberts.

DOMFS Month- Dental Radiography

The same as an orthopaedic surgeon cannot work without first performing radiographs, dentists too cannot work without them.

Dental radiographs are always performed as part of the oral health assessment to evaluate the true extension of the lesions.

Dogs:
Radiographs of normal teeth yielded incidental or clinically important findings in 41.7 and 27.8% of dogs, respectively.

Radiographs of teeth with clinical lesions yielded additional or clinically essential information in 50.0% and 22.6 % of dogs, respectively.

Cats:
Radiographs of normal teeth yielded incidental or clinically important findings in 4.8 and 41.7% of cats, respectively.

Radiographs of teeth with clinical lesions yielded additional or clinically essential information in 53.9% and 32.2 % of cats, respectively.

DOMFS Month- Oral Assessment and Dental charting

It is recommended that your pet´s teeth be evaluated regularly by your vet. This commonly happens as part of the annual vaccinations or the six-month health checks.

Conscious oral examinations have many limitations, and therefore, it is important for your pet to undergo regular comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment (COHAT) under general anaesthesia. During this procedure, we are able to assess many parameters, as shown in the chart, as well as perform full sets of radiographs to identify pathology that otherwise would go missing.

For the charting of the mouth we use a dental probe / explorer and a dental chart.

The probe (colour-banded side) is used to measure the pockets and gum recession, and the explorer(shard end) to check fractured teeth or defects on the tooth

Client Review Time- We truly appreciate every review!

"You guys are awesome! When Willow suddenly stopped being able to stand on her back legs, we were destroyed. We were referred to Bristol Vet Specialists who were able to see us that same day on a Friday night. We drove the long journey worried that she’d never walk again… It’s been slow progress since the operation, but there has been progress. Then, all of a sudden last week, Willow started to walk again without being supported or encouraged. Amazing! Thank you so much."
