With our current heatwave if you can provide shallow dishes of water around your garden it would really help all wildlife, but particularly hedgehogs.

We admitted a tiny little hoglet today who was only 120g, but was very very dehydrated, the first thing it needed was some subcutaneous fluids to be able to function. Luckily the weather was in its favour so it was able to sustain some semblance of body heat.

But water…. WATER…. WATER please, it’s really important to help them survive in this heat. We are suffering, but animals who have no choice but to drink from puddles, ponds etc do not have the ability to turn a tap on and pour themselves a drink.

If anyone can help us with dry kitten food (for the kittens and hoglets) and cat litter (for the cats) we would very much appreciate it.

Our wishlist on Amazon can be found here:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/1L65X04GQS6GO?ref_=wl_share

If you do some scrolling you can find cat litter and dried kitten food on the list. We are very low on both with many babies to feed and litter trays to clean out!!

Thank you very much for your continued support.

Hera is a beautiful looking girl who needs a home probably without children and other animals.

She’s quite a characterful girl who can get overstimulated by touch this results in her giving you bear hugs and ‘love’ bites. They don’t hurt, but it’s a bit of a shock if you aren’t expecting it!

Hera was found in a very rural area with no houses around, she does have a microchip and was advertised as missing for over 2 months in her local area, unfortunately her microchip was not registered to anyone making her unable to be reunited with anyone.

Hera is a wonderful and funny cat, we think she’s probably around 2-3 years old. She will bring life and laughter to your home with her antics. She is definitely not a shy and retiring cat. She’s also very hard to take photos of as she rarely keeps still.

If you are interested in giving Hera her permanent home please complete the below form and mention her name so I know it’s Hera that you would like to register for.

Yesterday was a busy day for hoglets, we admitted 6 little ones from different areas, the heaviest only weighing 150g.

If you see a hedgehog smaller than the palm of a man’s hand, with no adult hedgehog there is a high likelihood that that hedgehog needs your help. Please get the animal into a high sided box and contact your local wildlife rescue/hedgehog rescue who will be able to advise you on the next steps to take.

All these babies were found on their own, with some being kept an eye on periodically for a week. I cannot stress enough how important it is to get the animal into a box first and ask questions later if you see them on their own. You could be saving an animals life.

We also admitted 4 hoglets from Minehead last week after they had been spotted by some holidaymakers, it was believed that Mum may have been run over some two days previously, which meant that the babies had managed to survive given the warm weather we have been having recently. But they were dehydrated and very cold when I picked them up from the vets. Sadly, since picking them up they have all subsequently passed away, but I was fighting against odds that were stacked against them.

This year seems to be a particularly bad year for ticks with many of the hoglets being covered in them on arrival. If you do a hedgehog with more than 10 ticks, it’s probably advisable to contact your local rescue to discuss this with them as they may have a different philosophy on their own number of acceptable ticks on a hedgehog.

As ever, but particularly now that the babies are very much venturing out of their nests please check areas before you strim or cut down any vegetation that could contain a hedgehog nest. I am hearing about some very nasty, and preventable injuries sustained by hedgehogs due to the use of garden tools. If you do accidentally injure an animal, hedgehog or other please take that animal directly to the vets. Do not try to care for it yourself before taking it eventually to the vet. You are causing untold pain to that animal and it may have stood a chance at rehabilitation if its wounds could be cleaned and stitched.

If you call me and I do not answer please leave a message I will return your call, I just can’t always reach my phone when my hands are full of kitten or hoglet or other animal.

Last week we welcomed a feral Mummy and her 4 sons to the rescue.
Mummy is very scared but not at all nasty, her sons are much more feisty than she is despite their teeny tiny stature. On veterinary advice I removed the kittens from Mum last week (as Mum is off to be spayed tomorrow and it gives a chance for her milk supply to dry up a bit before her op) as they were eating solids and quite frankly they are going to need a lot of work to tame them down and make them suitable for the loving pet homes they deserve.

The four boys are almost identical, only varying slightly in size and temperament. We estimate that they are around 4 weeks old. I had a breakthrough with two of the boys last week when they fell asleep on my knee which was lovely, and they will now climb on to me and sit on my knee. The other two are more wary, but now don’t spin round at me to hiss and spit at me if I touch them.

It may take some time to get the boys ready for their new homes as I want to be sure that they are comfortable with humans and being picked up, but as they are all black I also want to be sure to have given them enough advertisement so that they don’t get left on the shelf just because of the colour of their fur. For me it’s about the personality of the cat rather than the colour and already one of these little ones is a sweetheart who I know is going to be a real cuddle bug.

If you are interested in rehoming one of these little boys please complete our adoption form

Buffy came in today after being seen with her sibling for the last week or so with no Mummy around. Buffy sadly hadn’t been seen with her sibling for a little while. This is her first meal in the rescue and I think she started to enjoy it. Buffy is one of 6 hoglets that arrived at the rescue from various parts of North and Mid Devon and there is already at least one more that needs to be picked up in the morning. I was less pleased to see Buffy going for a wade through her food and she will be first in line for a bath tomorrow!! If you see a hedgehog smaller or a similar size to the palm of your hand with no adult hedgehog please put it in a box and contact your nearest rescue centre who will be able to give you advice on next steps to take.

Our beautiful Dolly is ready for rehoming.

Dolly is around a year old, she had her first litter of kittens 8 weeks ago, sadly she lost two of her kittens and had to have an emergency c section and spay. However, since then she has been an amazing Mummy to her 3 remaining kittens, but now the time has come for her to find a home of her own.

She is fully recovered from her surgery and her fur is growing back well.

Dolly is a very sweet cat and loves attention, she isn’t keen on dogs who get in her face as she was previously attacked by one, but with slow introductions I am fairly confident that she could live alongside a dog. She gets on well with other cats but could happily live on her own in a house.

If you are interested in giving Dolly the new home and all the love and affection she deserves please complete the form.

This is Jim, she arrived on Monday from Charter Vets. Jim is 80g but is starting to eat solids on her own. She’s very good at lapping which makes the entire weaning process so much easier and to date she’s not created too much mess, thank goodness!!

We also added another orphan to our flock of Shelducks. Shelducks are far more accepting of a new member than mallards - who insist on beating up a new member therefore we do not add new ducklings to the flock once they reach a certain size.

All babies will be released when they reach the appropriate age and are independent.

Hello lovely people in my phone!!

We are at a little bit of a crisis in terms of our financial situation. We dipped again in to our non existent overdraft 😱

I’ve moved all our kindly donated money from PayPal to the charity account but we are still very low on funds and the usual fear of the bin charges are looming. However, it’s very reduced as it’s through the council and not a private scheme. We need £354 to pay for our commercial waste for the year.

If anyone is able to help us out we would very much appreciate it. We are also very low on cat litter and kitten food.

Here is the link with all the ways to donate and the drop off points. Thank you for reading.
