✨ What a filly! ✨

To kick off the foaling of our plaited ponies at 22:06 last night, we were delighted to welcome a beautiful skewbald Riding Pony filly foal, to make 12.2h 💕

By Ryehall Piccadilly
Out of Sandboro China Doll

She is beautifully marked, elegant, feminine, and already full of presence — a truly special little lady.

Mum and baby are both doing wonderfully, and we couldn’t be more pleased with this stunning girl 🌸

Now comes the hardest part… choosing the perfect name! It has to be something dainty, feminine, and worthy of this beautiful little filly ✨

Name suggestions very welcome 💗

So far I’ve come up with….
* Piccadilly Doll - Doll
* China Rose - Rose
* Dolly Mixture - Dolly
* Clementine
* Cherry Blossom - Cherry/Blossom
* Lady of the Lake - Lady

Pet foaled first! An beautiful bay and white filly foal 🐴🤍🤎

She doesn’t have a name yet. I love short, sweet, vintage-style names with the same vibe as:
Ada, Vera, Rita, Ruby, Lola, Cilla, and Poppy

Nothing too modern—more classic, feminine, and a little bit quirky ✨

Would love your ideas! What would you call her? 💕

Another fabulous team day at CHAPS U.K. Spring Show & Stallion Grading

Thank you to Leanne Pickford and team for organising another fab show

EJL Chantilly Cream of the Crop was a little overwhelmed in the 2yr old NN/NCT Youngstock but for only her 2nd show we were very pleased with how she behaved - it was far busier than I expected 😂

Peggie and Atkins Silver Storm went amazingly in the CHAPS Junior Ridden qualifying for CHAPS Champs later this year - this duo really excited me and her smile as she went round was fabulous to see

Atkins Silver Sahara owned and bred by Jennifer Atkinson won an extremely strong NCTP Inhand class qualifying for CHAPS Champs - beautifully ran out by Peggie while Jason and I were in the gradings.

Thank you as always to the team around us

All horses turned out using Equioils and Smart Grooming products. Fed on Equibalancer.com bespoke balancer.

🌙🐴 Foal Watch Update!

It’s night 3 of wax for Pet now… I really do wonder how much longer she can hold on! 👀🍼✨

My guess is we won’t be waiting too much longer now.

And I don’t think Lollipop and China will be far behind her either 🤎🐎 The foaling season is about to get very exciting around here!

Who thinks Pet will finally make her move tonight? ⬇️🌟

✨ Ever found one of these after foaling?

This is a hippomane (sometimes called foal’s bread) — a completely normal, rubbery mass that can sometimes be found in the allantoic sac of the mare’s placenta after birth.

Scientifically, it forms from proteins, minerals, and cellular debris within the allantoic fluid that gradually collect in layers during pregnancy. As the foal moves, these layers can build up into the smooth, leathery lump you sometimes see at foaling.

So why is it there sometimes and not others?
It simply depends on whether enough material collects in the fluid to form one. Some pregnancies produce the perfect conditions for the layers to build up, while others don’t — which is why one mare may have one foaling with a hippomane and the next without. Both are completely normal. 🐴

Because they’re not seen at every birth, they’ve long been wrapped in horse folklore, with many believing they bring luck and good fortune to the foal, mare, and the stud. 🍀

Some old traditions even say that if you toss it onto the barn roof, it keeps the luck at the yard for the season ahead.

We love how horse breeding blends science, tradition, and a little stable superstition.

Have you found one this foaling season? 👇✨

🐴 Ventral oedema in late-term mares — what is it?

That soft fluid swelling you sometimes see running along the underside of an in-foal mare’s tummy, from front to back, is called ventral oedema.

It’s very common in the final weeks before foaling and is usually caused by the weight of the foal and uterus slowing circulation and lymph drainage, allowing fluid to settle in the lowest part of the belly. It’s often more noticeable in mares carrying low or with bigger, more pendulous bellies.

💡 What should you do?
Usually, nothing more than monitor it.
As long as your mare is:
• bright and comfortable
• eating normally
• walking freely (turnout is better than being stabled)
• not painful to touch
• and the swelling is soft/spongy

…it’s typically considered a normal late-pregnancy change.

⚠️ When to call your vet
If it comes on suddenly, becomes painful, grows rapidly, or your mare seems uncomfortable, it’s worth getting your vet involved to rule out more serious abdominal wall issues.

⏰ How fast does it disappear after foaling?
The good news is it usually goes down quickly after foaling — often within a few hours to a couple of days, as her circulation returns to normal.

A completely normal part of the countdown to meeting baby for many mares 💛🐎

Ever noticed those prominent veins along a pregnant mare’s belly and wondered what they mean? 🐴

These are called milk veins — and they’re one of the many fascinating signs that a mare is preparing for foaling.

👉 What are milk veins?
Milk veins are enlarged blood vessels that run along the underside of the abdomen. They carry increased blood flow to the udder, supporting milk production.

👉 When do they appear?
They usually become more visible in the final weeks of pregnancy, though timing can vary between mares.

👉 Why do they matter?
As a mare gets closer to foaling, her body ramps up milk production. The udder needs more nutrients and oxygen, so blood flow increases — causing these veins to stand out more clearly.

✨ What it means for you:
While milk veins alone won’t pinpoint the exact day, their prominence is a helpful indicator that your mare is entering the final stages of pregnancy and getting ready to foal.

As always, keep an eye on other signs too — udder development, waxing, and changes in behavior — for the full picture.

Nature really does give us clues if we know where to look 💛

🐴 Why do mares get “wax” on their teats before foaling?

That little waxy buildup is one of nature’s final foaling countdown signs. ✨

As a mare gets very close to giving birth, her udder begins producing colostrum — the first milk, packed with antibodies and nutrients for the newborn foal. Tiny droplets of this thick fluid can dry at the end of the teats, creating what breeders call “waxing up.”

🍼 What it means:
- The mare’s body is preparing to feed the foal immediately after birth
- Hormone changes are signaling that labor is near
- Foaling often happens within 24–48 hours, though timing can vary

⚠️ Important: Waxing is a helpful clue, not a guarantee. Some mares wax for days, some only for hours, and some skip it altogether.

If your mare is waxing, it’s a good time to increase monitoring and have your foaling kit ready. A healthy start begins with that first colostrum meal. 💛

🌿 Grazing Land Wanted – South Cumbria 🌿

Due to our growing herd and highly successful breeding programme I’m currently looking for additional sole-use grazing to rent for broodmare ponies, with the potential to purchase in the future (though that’s not essential right now).

I’m open to anything from 10 to 50 acres—whether it’s traditional pasture or larger areas of rougher/moorland grazing. It doesn’t need to be pristine or crop-ready, just safe and suitable for ponies. We don’t mind putting in some work if a mutually agreeable arrangement

📍 Based near Ulverston, but happy to travel anywhere across South Cumbria for the right setup.

I’m a reliable, straightforward tenant—easy to deal with and happy to pay 12 months upfront for peace of mind - references also available from landlords I have been a tenant for 10 years plus. Long-term or rolling arrangements would be ideal, and I’m keen to build a good relationship with the landowner.

If you have land sitting unused or know someone who might, I’d really appreciate a message or a share 🙏🏽

🥰 Foal watch is officially ON! 🐴✨

We’ve got two very different mare bags and it’s time to place your bets… who foals first? 👀

🌙 Moonstone — maiden mare
📅 Due: 22nd April

🌸 Pet — experienced broodmare
📅 Due: 5th April

Both mares are in foal to Planets Bosco of Shortridge, known as Boris.

One first-timer, one seasoned pro… but as we all know, mares love to keep us guessing! 😅

💬 Drop your pick in the comments: Moonstone or Pet?
Will the maiden surprise us, or will Pet show her experience? 🍼🐎
